Cambria Home Additions & ADU: The Houston Owner’s Guide

If you’re researching Cambria for a home addition or ADU project in Houston, you’re likely weighing whether a premium quartz surface belongs in a new living space, mother-in-law suite, or garage conversion. A Cambria countertop installation for an addition typically runs $48,000 – $75,000 as part of the broader project when paired with soft-close KraftMaid cabinetry, a Moen or Kohler fixture package, and level-up flooring work, while a full standalone ADU with Cambria surfaces and a complete kitchenette lands between $90,000 – $220,000 in the Houston market. What most owners discover too late: Cambria doesn’t fail as a slab. The failures happen in the seams, the substrate, the sink mount, and the overhang support, and those are exactly the points we inspect before a single panel goes in.

We’ve been called out to additions near Meyerland, Bellaire, and the Energy Corridor where a Cambria top looked perfect from six feet away but had a hairline seam gap at the cooktop cutout or a sink rim that had been siliconed instead of properly clamped. By the time water gets under the edge, the cabinet deck below is already swelling. Graham Stein, our owner, keeps a moisture meter in his truck for exactly this reason. A written scope and a covered floor before any work begins is where the trust starts.

Which Cambria Models This Applies To

Cambria’s product line spans more than 200 designs, but for home additions and ADUs in Houston, we most often install three families: Brittanicca, Torquay, and Summerhill in the classic matte finish, plus Ella and Skara Brae for owners who want a warmer, less veined look in a rental-ready ADU. All Cambria slabs are 1 cm, 2 cm, or 3 cm thick quartz with the same resin ratio, but the 3 cm thickness is the one we specify for any surface that will carry a sink, a cooktop, or daily meal prep in a second dwelling unit. The 2 cm slab needs a plywood substrate underneath; the 3 cm can sit directly on a properly leveled cabinet deck, which matters in Houston where humidity cycles push and pull on cabinet boxes seasonally.

If you already have Cambria in your primary house and are matching it for an addition, pull the inkjet label off the underside of your existing countertop before you call us. It’s usually hidden near the sink cutout. That label carries the design name and the lot number, and a lot number from 2019 won’t perfectly match a 2026 pour. Quartz color drifts slightly between production runs. When an exact match matters for a new island or a run of perimeter counter, we order the full addition from the same lot. If you’re flexible, we’ll match the closest current production and show you the two samples side by side under LED and natural light before you commit.

One thing to know up front: Elmstead Remodeling Houston is an independent remodeling contractor. We are not affiliated with Cambria, but we purchase directly from Cambria’s authorized regional slab distributors and pass the manufacturer warranty through with every installation.

Signs Your Cambria Home Additions & ADU Is Failing

  • A seam you can feel with a fingernail. Cambria seams should be tight and filled with a color-matched adhesive. When you can catch a nail on the seam, the adhesive has shrunk or the underlying cabinets have shifted. In a Houston ADU with a pier-and-beam floor, this is more common than in a slab-on-grade addition.
  • Dark staining around the sink rim. Quartz doesn’t stain easily, but the silicone bond at the sink lip does, and once water sits there, the adhesive fails from the outside in. Replace the bond before the cabinet deck wicks moisture into the particleboard.
  • A hollow sound when you tap the overhang. Unsupported overhangs on a Cambria island will ring differently than fully supported sections. More than 12 inches of unsupported 3 cm quartz needs steel or corbel support. We see hairline cracks forming at the exact point where the support stops in older additions.
  • The sink is sitting lower on one side. Quartz doesn’t sag. If the sink is out of level, the cabinet frame under it has settled or gotten wet, and the weight of the Cambria is now pressing unevenly on a weak deck.
  • Cracked or popping grout at the backsplash transition. The countertop and the wall move at different rates through Houston’s wet-dry seasons. When the joint is rigid instead of a flexible color-matched caulk, something has to give, and it’s usually the gap filler first.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A walk-in pantry with wood shelving

For a Houston home addition or ADU, installed Cambria pricing with Elmstead Remodeling Houston runs from $45,000 – $130,000 for the full scope, which includes Cambria countertops, KraftMaid or Wellborn cabinetry built around them, plumbing fixture installation, and the finish work that makes the space live-in ready. The countertop portion alone sits between $2,000 – $6,500 depending on linear footage, edge profile, and whether we’re cutting for a sink, a cooktop, or both. The variables that push a project toward the top of the range: a large island with a waterfall edge, a second bathroom vanity in the addition, or a kitchenette in an ADU with its own sink and cooktop cutouts.

Every quote includes the written price before the first tool leaves the truck, the template in digital format before cutting starts, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise on the completed work. If something is not done right after we’ve finished, we make it right. No change orders, no surprise line items, no re-quote after the countertops are on the truck.

DIY or Call Us?

You can absolutely do the research phase yourself: measure the existing top, check for the Cambria label, and note where the water lines and sink flange sit. Beyond that, countertop replacement in a home addition is not a weekend project. A 3 cm Cambria slab weighs roughly 18 pounds per square foot, and a typical kitchen run is several hundred pounds. Cutting quartz requires diamond blades and water-cooled saws, and the dust is silica. Silicosis is not a theoretical risk for a homeowner cutting quartz in a garage. Neither is a cracked $1,200 slab because the cabinet deck wasn’t shimmed level before the adhesive set.

If you’re in Houston and want the Cambria in your addition or ADU swapped, repaired, or extended, call (254) 272-5240. We’ll put eyes on it, give you a written line-item price, and tell you honestly whether a repair makes sense or a full replacement of that section is the better money.
