Schluter Bathroom Remodeling: The Houston Owner’s Guide
Schluter bathroom remodeling in Houston typically runs between $9,000 and $28,000 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing a failed waterproofing membrane, retiling a shower pan, or gutting the whole wet area and rebuilding it on the Schluter system. Most Houston homeowners discover something is wrong after the fact: a soft spot near the curb, grout that keeps cracking along a change of plane, or the sharp smell of trapped moisture behind tile. The good news is that a failed part rarely means a failed bathroom. We stock Schluter-compatible components on the truck and can usually assess the damage, write a fixed price, and schedule the repair the same week. Elmstead Remodeling Houston is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Schluter Systems, but we’ve been working with their products long enough to know exactly what fails first in Houston’s humidity and exactly what it takes to set it right.
Which Schluter Models This Applies To
The parts we match most often in Houston bathrooms are from the KERDI waterproofing line: KERDI-BOARD panels, KERDI membrane over drywall or cement board, KERDI-BAND at seams and corner joints, and KERDI-DRAIN or the newer KERDI-LINE drain assemblies. We also see plenty of DITRA and DITRA-HEAT failures under bathroom tile where an existing floor was renovated rather than replaced. Here is the compatibility gotcha that trips up a lot of Houston homeowners: KERDI membrane and KERDI-BAND from different production runs can have different fleece thicknesses, and if they’re not bedded with an unmodified thinset and the correct trowel notch, the overlap will eventually separate. We measure every existing substrate before ordering anything, because a 5mm board is not interchangeable with a 12.5mm board in a wet wall. For most Schluter parts, OEM is the right call. The waterproofing warranty only travels if the right components are used in the right combination, and aftermarket membranes glued onto Schluter drains almost always fail at the bonding flange. What we stock on the truck: KERDI-BAND in multiple widths, inside and outside corners, pipe seals, mixing valve seals, KERDI-DRAIN grates, and a roll of KERDI membrane. What we order same-day from our Houston suppliers: KERDI-BOARD panels, DITRA-HEAT cable and uncoupling mat, and KERDI-LINE channel drains.

Signs Your Schluter Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing
- Grout cracking at the wall-floor transition every few months. This usually means movement at the change of plane, and in a Schluter system, that joint should always be filled with silicone, not grout. If someone grouted it anyway, the membrane underneath is now tearing with every expansion cycle.
- A soft or spongy spot on the shower floor near the drain. Houston’s humidity keeps thinset damp longer than it should, and if the mortar bed under a KERDI-DRAIN wasn’t sloped and packed correctly, the pan compresses and the grate starts moving. That is a tear-out-and-redo failure, and patching it only buys a few months.
- Efflorescence or dark staining running up the wall tile from the floor. Water is traveling behind the tile and wicking up the substrate. With KERDI over drywall, this means a seam failed somewhere below, usually where the floor membrane meets a wall that wasn’t prepped clean of drywall dust.
- The smell of trapped moisture that never completely leaves, even with the fan running. Schluter systems drain through the flange into the shower drain plumbing. If a KERDI-DRAIN bonding flange wasn’t recessed properly, water pools in the tray and never evacuates. The smell is coming from stagnant water inside the assembly.
- Loose floor tile anywhere outside the shower in a renovated bathroom. If the previous contractor installed tile directly on plywood in a Houston bathroom, that was never a Schluter system. When we open it up, we usually find no uncoupling membrane at all, and the fix is pulling the floor and installing DITRA the way it should have been done.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
A Schluter-specific bathroom repair in Houston falls into three pricing bands. A shower pan or curb membrane repair runs $3,500 to $8,500. A shower surround replacement, including new KERDI-BOARD walls and tile, falls between $4,500 and $12,000. A complete Schluter bathroom remodel, with tear-out, new shower system, floor, vanity, and fixtures, lands at $9,000 to $28,000, matching the range for a full bathroom remodel in Houston. The variation comes from tile choice, access (second-floor bathrooms with no exterior entry add labor), and whether we find water damage in the framing once the tile comes off. Before any work starts, you’ll have a written price in hand, covering the Schluter components, the thinset, the labor, the clean-up, and our 365-Day Done Right Promise on the completed work. If it’s not done right after the job is complete, we make it right. What you will never see is a price that grows after the crew arrives. Graham Stein, who runs Elmstead Remodeling Houston, writes each bathroom scope himself and walks the job with you before a single tool comes out of the truck.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check your own grout condition, run the shower for ten minutes and watch for water beading behind the glass, and press lightly on the shower floor near the drain. What you should not do is pull tile off a failed Schluter shower yourself if you suspect framing damage underneath. Houston’s humidity means that once a waterproofing assembly fails, the framing behind it is often wet, and the repairs need to be cut back to sound wood, treated, and dried before any new board goes up. That work involves a moisture meter, a real understanding of how KERDI-BAND laps over changes of plane, and patience with thinset open times in a humid climate. If the part is a failed floor membrane and the tile is already loose, an experienced homeowner with a Schluter DITRA kit can sometimes reset a small area, but we’d rather you call (254) 272-5240 first and let us tell you whether it’s a one-day patch or a full redo. The estimate is free, and the answer will be honest either way.
FAQs

A correctly installed Schluter shower system should last 25 to 30 years in Houston, assuming the tile and grout are maintained and the bathroom is ventilated. The failures we see are almost always installation errors, not product defects. A seamless KERDI shower installed over the right substrate and the right thinset does not typically fail from Houston’s humidity alone. Call (254) 272-5240 if you suspect an installation issue and want a written assessment.
It depends entirely on where the failure is. A failed seam at a corner can sometimes be repaired by removing a few rows of tile and patching with fresh KERDI-BAND, but a failed shower pan or a failed drain flange almost always means pulling the pan and rebuilding it. We will never sell you a patch that buys three months when a replacement is what’s actually needed. Call (254) 272-5240 and we’ll give you a straight answer after looking at it.
A shower pan replacement typically takes three to five working days, including tile, grout, and cure time before the shower can be used. A full bathroom remodel on the Schluter system runs two to four weeks depending on the size of the room and whether we’re moving plumbing. We’ll give you a written schedule with the written price, and a daily end-of-day walkthrough so you’re never surprised about what happened while you were at work.
We stock the parts that fail most often, including KERDI-BAND, corner seals, pipe seals, and KERDI-DRAIN components, on the truck. KERDI-BOARD panels and DITRA-HEAT mats are ordered same-day from our Houston suppliers and arrive within one to two business days. We also work with named-brand partners like KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone, so if your Schluter repair turns into a larger bathroom project, every material is one we can source and stand behind. Call (254) 272-5240 for a free estimate, and you’ll know exactly what’s in stock before we even schedule the visit.
If your Schluter shower is showing signs of trouble and you want the honest answer from someone who works with these systems every week, call (254) 272-5240. The estimate is free, the price is written, and the floor gets covered before any work begins. A written price and a covered floor before any work begins – that is where the trust starts.
