Schluter Home Additions & ADU: The Houston Owner’s Guide
Elmstead Remodeling Houston installs and services Schluter waterproofing and uncoupling systems inside home additions and ADU projects across Houston, with complete addition builds typically running $45,000 – $130,000 and ADU construction landing between $90,000 – $220,000 depending on square footage, foundation work, and finish level. If you’re searching this page, you likely already have a Schluter product in your home, a failed or failing installation, and a specific question about whether it can be matched, repaired, or replaced without tearing everything out. The short answer: in most cases, yes. We stock Schluter-compatible membranes, profiles, and transition pieces, and we can source the exact match for your existing system, often within the same week.
Most Houston homeowners discover a Schluter part has failed the quiet way: a floor transition starts lifting in the summer humidity, a shower corner shows a hairline crack where the wall meets the pan, or a KERDI band peels at the seam after a year of Texas temperature swings. Sometimes it’s caught during a remodel inspection. Sometimes it’s a slow leak that shows up as a water stain on the ceiling below. Either way, the fix usually costs far less than the tear-out people fear, especially when the right part is matched early.
We’re an independent Houston contractor, not affiliated with Schluter Systems. That matters because we can repair what you have or plan a full addition around it, whichever serves your house better. We also keep parts familiarity with KraftMaid cabinetry, Cambria and Silestone surfaces, because additions rarely stay a one-brand project for long.
Which Schluter Models This Applies To

Schluter makes a wide line, but the products we see most often in Houston home additions and ADU builds break into three families: KERDI waterproofing membranes and bands for showers and wet areas, DITRA and DITRA-HEAT uncoupling mats for tile floors, and the metal finishing profiles like SCHIENE, RONDEC, and QUADEC that edge the tile. Each family uses different part numbers, different installation methods, and different failure points, so the first step is always identifying exactly what you have.
The compatibility gotcha most people miss: DITRA and DITRA-HEAT are not interchangeable mid-project. DITRA-HEAT has channels cut for the heating cable and sits slightly thicker, which changes floor height at thresholds. If you’ve got a cracked DITRA mat under a kitchen floor and add DITRA-HEAT in one section, you’ll create a trip step unless the transition is planned. In slab-on-grade Houston homes, that height difference also affects cabinet toe-kicks and exterior door swings. We measure the mat thickness (DITRA runs about 1/8 inch, DITRA-HEAT closer to 1/4 inch with cable) before quoting any repair or addition that touches existing floors.
For KERDI systems, the part number matters at the seam. KERDI-BAND comes in 5-inch and 7-inch widths, and using the wrong width on an inside corner will fail under Houston’s humidity cycles. We match OEM Schluter parts wherever the system is under warranty or the installation is newer than five years. For older homes where the original product is discontinued, we use Schluter’s current equivalent, because the membrane chemistry changed years ago and mixing generations at a seam invites a premature bond failure.
What we stock on the truck: KERDI-BAND rolls in both widths, DITRA mat by the roll, SCHIENE and RONDEC profiles in the common finishes (brushed nickel, chrome, white), KERDI-FIX sealant, and mixing-compatible thin-set specified by Schluter’s install guide. Odd sizes and less common profile finishes arrive within the week from our Houston suppliers.

Signs Your Schluter Home Additions & ADU Is Failing
- Lifting or curling floor transition profiles. This is the most common Houston call we get. The SCHIENE or RONDEC profile was set with the wrong thin-set or not enough of it, and summer humidity plus foot traffic works the metal loose. Underlying cause: inadequate mortar coverage at the profile flange. Fix is usually remove, clean, reset.
- Hairline cracks where shower wall meets floor. In a KERDI shower, that crack usually means movement at the pan-to-wall joint. The KERDI band may have been lapped incorrectly, or the substrate behind it (drywall, cement board) shifted with Houston’s seasonal expansion. Water gets behind the tile and the damage spreads invisibly.
- Tile cracking in a straight line over a subfloor seam. DITRA uncoupling mats exist to isolate the tile from subfloor movement, but if the mat wasn’t fully embedded in thin-set, or the seam between two mats wasn’t overlapped and sealed, the crack telegraphs through. In Houston’s clay soil, slab movement makes this symptom show up faster than northern markets see.
- Musty smell or dark staining at shower curb corners. Water is wicking past a failed KERDI corner or an improperly sealed DITRA seam at the curb. By the time you smell it, the framing below has been damp for a while. This is the one symptom we ask people not to wait on.
- Heated floor section runs cooler or trips the thermostat. In DITRA-HEAT, a broken heating cable or a crushed mat channel reads as a cold stripe. If the system trips immediately when switched on, the cable was nicked during install or a furniture leg compressed the channel. Both are repairable without replacing the whole floor.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For a Schluter part repair in Houston, you’re looking at a range, not a flat number. A single profile replacement or KERDI seam repair typically lands between $400 and $1,800 depending on access, tile removal around the affected area, and whether we can match the existing profile finish or need to swap it for a current Schluter equivalent. A full shower pan KERDI replacement, including removing the bottom row of tile, re-waterproofing, and retiling, usually runs $2,500 to $5,500. Full home additions and ADUs are separate conversations, but we’ll use the same named materials and the same written price discipline no matter the size.
What drives the cost: labor to remove tile without damaging surrounding work, the Schluter part itself, thin-set and sealant, and the time needed for proper cure in Houston’s humidity. We never shortcut the cure time. A KERDI seam that isn’t fully cured before tile goes up is the next failure waiting to happen.
Every repair and every addition from Elmstead Remodeling Houston includes a written price before any work starts. You’ll see the parts line, the labor line, and the warranty line in writing. The 365-Day Done Right Promise applies: if it’s not done right after the job is complete, we make it right. Drop cloths go down before cutting starts, and you’ll get a photo of the clean-up before the crew leaves.
DIY or Call Us?
Some Schluter work is genuinely safe to inspect yourself. You can check whether a floor profile is lifting by pressing it with your thumb. You can photograph a shower crack with a coin for scale so we can assess it. You can note whether a DITRA-HEAT thermostat shows an error code and what the room temperature reads. These notes save us a trip and give you a clearer picture of the scope.
What we don’t recommend doing yourself: pulling up tile to inspect a membrane, cutting into a shower curb, or attempting to reset a profile with construction adhesive you have on a shelf. Schluter systems are only waterproof when the lapping, the thin-set, and the cure time are all correct. A failing curb corner that gets caulked from the outside traps water behind the tile and rots the framing faster. A profile that’s reset with the wrong adhesive pops off in the first Houston cold front.
If the failure is at a wet area seam, a shower curb, or a heated floor cable, call us at (254) 272-5240. Graham Stein and our Houston crews will give you an honest read on whether it’s a same-week repair or a bigger conversation. Estimates are free, and the written price comes before any tile comes off.
FAQs

Properly installed KERDI and DITRA systems are engineered to outlast the tile assembly they’re protecting, often 25 years or more. In Houston’s clay soil and humidity cycles, the weak points are seams and transitions rather than the membrane itself, so a post-installation check of corners and profile edges every few years is enough to catch small failures before they become water damage. Call (254) 272-5240 for an inspection if your system is older than a decade.
Yes, most failed seams, lifted profiles, and cracked DITRA sections can be repaired without a full tear-out. The condition is that the surrounding substrate must still be sound. If the framing or subfloor has already absorbed water, the repair has to go deeper. We’ll tell you which situation you’re in before any work starts. Call (254) 272-5240 for an exact quote.
A single profile replacement or seam repair is usually a half-day to a full day on site, plus cure time before tile goes back over it. A shower pan waterproofing replacement runs three to five days including tile work. We sequence the work around family rest hours where possible and keep the area sealed off from pets until the thin-set cures.
We stock the common KERDI bands, DITRA mats, profile finishes, and sealants on the truck, so most repairs don’t wait on shipping. Uncommon profile finishes or oversized DITRA-HEAT runs arrive from our Houston suppliers within the week. You’ll know at the estimate whether the part is on hand or on order.
