Sterling Bathroom Remodeling: The Houston Owner’s Guide
If you own a Sterling bathtub, shower, or wall surround in Houston and a part has failed, we can match the correct replacement, order it, and install it. Most Sterling bathroom remodeling jobs in Houston run between $9,000 and $28,000 installed, depending on whether you’re replacing a shower pan, swapping a full tub-and-surround, or rebuilding the entire wet area. Owners usually discover a Sterling part has failed when they notice a crack in the acrylic, a shower door that no longer seals, or water staining on the ceiling below a second-floor bathroom.
We’re Elmstead Remodeling Houston, an independent contractor. We’re not affiliated with Sterling, but we work with their product lines every month and know which series the local Houston supply houses actually keep in inventory. That matters when your shower has been down for a week and you’re waiting on a backordered flange.
Which Sterling Models This Applies To

Sterling’s bathroom product lines break down into a few families, and the compatibility details matter. The Vikrell line (tub-and-shower combos and wall surrounds) uses a compression-molded composite that resists cracking better than thin acrylic. The Ensemble series is Vikrell-based and sold as multi-piece surrounds that lock together. The Accord and Finesse lines use a different wall format and their drain kits are not interchangeable with Ensemble, even when the tub dimensions look identical. If you’re matching a shower door, Sterling’s Pivot and Bypass models are sized to their specific tub deck profiles, and a generic door rarely seals right without a filler kit.
The fastest way to identify your model is the label. On a tub or surround, look for a molded stamp or sticker near the drain or on the backside of the apron. On a shower door, the model is often etched into the glass corner or printed on the hinge barrel. Take a photo of that stamp with your phone and text it to our office. Graham Stein, who runs Elmstead Remodeling Houston, checks those photos himself before we quote, because ordering the wrong Sterling skirt or drain assembly costs you a second trip charge and another week without a working shower.
OEM Sterling parts come with Sterling’s manufacturing warranty, and for anything under that warranty we recommend going OEM. Outside warranty, we’ll still quote the genuine part, but we’ll also tell you when a quality aftermarket drain or trim kit fits correctly and saves you $150 to $300 without cutting corners.

Signs Your Sterling Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing
- Cracks or spider webbing in the tub or shower floor. This is the classic failure point in Vikrell units that were installed without a proper mortar bed underneath, which we see often in homes built in Houston’s big subdivisions during the 1990s and early 2000s. The floor flexes under foot, and eventually the material fatigues.
- Water staining on the ceiling below a second-floor bath. Usually a drain gasket or the tub-to-drain connection has failed, sometimes because the original installer used plumber’s putty instead of the gasket that Sterling ships with the kit.
- A shower door that drags or won’t latch. The rollers wear first, but on Sterling doors we also see the bottom guide splitting where it meets the tub deck. If the door sits uneven, the frame has likely shifted and the guide is doing work it was never meant to do.
- Caulk that keeps pulling away from a surround seam. This often means the wall panel behind the caulk is moving because the original install skipped shims or left the drywall proud. Recaulking alone lasts about six months before the gap opens again.
- Squealing or groaning from the drain when water runs. This is usually a partially collapsed rubber seal inside the waste-and-overflow assembly. It is not dangerous, but it means the seal is failing and water is moving past it slowly into the plenum below.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

In Houston, a full Sterling bathroom remodel runs $9,000 to $28,000. A smaller job, like swapping a failed tub-and-surround for a new Sterling Ensemble unit in the same footprint, tends to land near the lower end. Larger work, like moving plumbing, rebuilding the pan, adding a niche, or converting to a walk-in shower, pushes toward the upper end. The two things that move the number most are whether the drain location changes and whether the original install reveals hidden water damage once we open the wall.
What’s included in our price: the new Sterling unit, all drain and trim components, demolition, haul-away, any subfloor or framing repair that the new installation requires, waterproofing, install, and cleanup. A written price is given before any work starts, and if the scope does not change, that is the price you pay. Every completed project carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not done right after the job is complete, we make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s the honest split. If you have a cracked trim ring or a worn shower door roller, you can order the part and replace it yourself in an hour with a screwdriver and a pair of pliers. But if the tub floor is cracked or a drain gasket has failed, this is a wet-area repair where a missed seal puts water into your Houston home’s framing for months before you see the stain. We have opened walls in Meyerland and Sharpstown where a previous homeowner’s silicone-only repair had been quietly feeding mold for two years.
Any replacement that involves cutting into the surround, resetting a pan, or disturbing the drain is work we recommend you let a trained professional do. One honest paragraph of caution: a failed drain on a second-floor bath is not a cosmetic problem. It is water leaving the intended path, and in Houston’s heat and humidity, that water grows things. If you’re unsure which category your repair falls into, call us at (254) 272-5240 and describe the symptom. We’ll tell you over the phone whether it’s a parts order or a service call, no charge for the conversation.
FAQs

A properly installed Sterling Vikrell unit typically lasts 20 to 30 years in Houston, where the main enemy is not the water itself but the humidity cycling and the movement of slab foundations in our clay soil. Improperly bedded tub floors can crack in under a decade, which is why installation quality matters more than the warranty print. Call (254) 272-5240 for a free assessment and a written estimate.
Small surface cracks in the non-structural areas of the pan can sometimes be patched with acrylic repair compound, but a cracked Vikrell floor or a failed drain flange cannot be reliably repaired without replacing the unit. We’ll tell you which one you have before we quote, and we won’t sell you a replacement if a repair is defensible. Call (254) 272-5240 for an honest assessment, free of charge.
A straight tub-and-surround swap in the same footprint typically takes two to three working days, including demo, rough-in inspection, waterproofing, install, and our final clean-up. Add a day or two if we’re moving plumbing or rebuilding framing. We set quiet hours for children’s sleep times and lay drop cloths on every path the crew walks. Call (254) 272-5240 for a schedule that fits your house.
For common items like drain assemblies, trim plates, and some door rollers, we can often source locally in Houston within a day through our supply partners. Less common series-specific parts, like Accord wall surrounds, may take a week or more to order. We’ll give you a written lead time before you commit. Call (254) 272-5240 and we’ll check availability for your exact model.
