Atlas Bathroom Remodeling: The Houston Owner’s Guide

Atlas bathroom remodeling in Houston typically runs $9,000 – $28,000 installed, depending on whether you’re replacing fixtures, moving plumbing, or gutting to the studs. We stock Atlas-compatible hardware and finishes on our trucks for the most common failure points: valve cartridges, shower diverters, drain assemblies, and trim kits. Most Houston homeowners discover a failed part the way you just did: a handle that spins without stopping water, a tub spout that leaks behind the wall when the shower runs, or a diverter that won’t send water up to the showerhead anymore.

We’re Elmstead Remodeling Houston, an independent remodeling contractor. We’re not affiliated with Atlas, but we install and replace Atlas bathroom components every week across Houston, from Meyerland to the Heights to Katy.

Key Takeaways:

  • Installed Atlas bathroom work in Houston: $9,000 – $28,000
  • Part-only replacements (cartridge, diverter, trim): often $150 – $600 with labor, addressed same week
  • Written price before any work starts, on every project, including single-part replacements
  • Named-brand partners: we also stock parts for KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone
  • We carry Atlas-compatible cartridges and trim kits on the truck for common series

Which Atlas Models This Applies To

Atlas manufactures bathroom fixtures across several series lines, and the compatibility details matter more than most Houston homeowners expect. The two we see most often in Houston bathrooms are the Atlas Traditional series (two-handle, widespread or centerset) and the Atlas Contractor series (single-handle tub/shower and lavatory faucets). If your handle is a single lever that rotates left-to-right for temperature and pulls outward for volume, you’re almost certainly in the Contractor series. Two separate handles on a plate mean Traditional series.

Here’s the gotcha most people miss: Atlas cartridges are not interchangeable across series. A Contractor series cartridge will not fit a Traditional valve body, even if both were installed the same year. To identify yours, shut the water off, pull the handle, and look for a stamped number on the brass stem or retaining clip. Atlas stamps a two- or three-digit code that tells us the exact cartridge spec. If you can’t find it, take a photo with your phone and call us; Graham Stein and our team can usually identify the series from the trim profile alone.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question: for Atlas, we generally recommend OEM brass cartridges over plastic aftermarket equivalents. The aftermarket options are cheaper up front but we’ve pulled too many of them out after two years in Houston’s hard water to recommend them as a first choice.

Signs Your Atlas Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing

  • Handle spins freely without changing temperature or flow. The cartridge stem has stripped or the internal stops have worn out. This is the single most common Atlas failure we see in Houston, and it usually means the cartridge needs replacement, not the whole valve.
  • Tub spout leaks while the shower runs. The diverter gate inside the spout has worn or cracked. On Atlas fixtures this is often repairable by replacing the spout assembly itself, which threads off once you loosen the setscrew underneath.
  • Water seeps from behind the handle when the water is on. A worn cartridge O-ring or a loose packing nut. Left alone in a Houston bathroom, this leaks into the wall cavity and rots drywall and subfloor. Fix it before you see staining.
  • Showerhead drips for hours after shutoff. The cartridge isn’t seating fully. In Houston’s hard-water zones like Katy and Cypress, mineral buildup accelerates this; sometimes descaling works, but most of the time the cartridge has to come out.
  • Temperature suddenly swings hot-cold in the middle of a shower. The pressure-balancing unit inside the Atlas cartridge has failed. This is the one that sends family members scrambling out of the shower, and it’s a straight cartridge swap in most Atlas Contractor series valves.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A full Atlas bathroom remodel in Houston runs $9,000 – $28,000. Smaller Atlas-specific repairs, like a cartridge replacement or diverter swap, are far less and usually land between $150 and $600 installed, depending on the series and access. Here’s the breakdown for the work we do most often:

  • Full bathroom remodel (Atlas fixtures included): $9,000 – $28,000
  • Small bathroom remodel / powder room: $5,000 – $12,000
  • Walk-in shower installation with Atlas trim: $4,500 – $12,000
  • Tub-to-shower conversion: $3,500 – $10,000
  • Shower replacement only: $3,000 – $8,500
  • Atlas cartridge or diverter replacement (part + labor): $150 – $600

Every price is written before work starts, on paper, and it doesn’t change once the crew arrives. What drives the range is scope: moving a drain, relocating supply lines, repairing water damage behind an old valve, and tile selection all move the number. We use drop cloths on the floors, shoe covers at the door, and we photograph the clean-up before we leave. The 365-Day Done Right Promise applies to every Atlas part we install: if it’s not done right, we make it right.

DIY or Call Us?

For an Atlas cartridge or diverter, there’s a narrow band of what we’d say is safe to check yourself. You can remove the handle and confirm the series stamp. You can snap photos of the trim and valve. You can shut off the water and tighten a loose packing nut that is causing a handle leak. That is honest, low-risk work.

What we don’t recommend is opening the valve body, pulling the cartridge without the right extraction tool, or replacing an Atlas tub spout if the copper stub-out is even slightly corroded. That stub-out is thin copper soldered inside the wall; if it turns with the spout, you now have a leak behind tile and a much larger repair. In Houston’s humidity and hard water, those stub-outs fail more often than people want to believe. If you’re not certain what you’re looking at, call (254) 272-5240 and describe it; we’ll tell you what you’re dealing with and whether it’s a five-minute fix or a service call.
