Tamko Kitchen Remodeling: The Houston Owner’s Guide

If you have a Tamko kitchen component that has failed or is starting to show wear, we stock and install Tamko-compatible kitchen remodeling parts across Houston, with most replacements running between $14,000 and $45,000 installed depending on scope, cabinetry, and countertop selections. Tamko manufactures roofing and waterproofing products, but in the kitchen remodeling trade, the Tamko name most often comes up around moisture barriers, underlayments, and waterproofing membranes that sit beneath tile, stone, and hardwood surfaces. When that layer fails, the visible kitchen surfaces above it start to lift, crack, or stain, and that is usually how Houston homeowners discover the problem. The good news: we carry the replacement materials on our trucks, and we can typically diagnose the issue in a single visit.

Elmstead Remodeling Houston is an independent contractor and not affiliated with Tamko. What we do is install Tamko and Tamko-compatible waterproofing, underlayment, and barrier products correctly, in kitchens from Meyerland to Spring Branch, so the floor or backsplash above them stays put for years. If you are seeing grout cracking in a straight line across your tile, a floor that sounds hollow in one spot, or cabinet bases that are darker at the bottom edge, the failed part is likely underneath the surface, not on it. That is where we start.

Which Tamko Models This Applies To

New painted shaker cabinets with an organized deep drawer

Tamko’s kitchen-relevant product lines break into a few families: the Tamko TW60 and TW40 underlayment membranes (used under tile and stone), the Tamko Moisture Guard and Aquaduct deck and wall barriers, and their self-adhering flashing and waterproofing strips that get used at countertop-to-backsplash transitions and around sink cutouts. The compatibility gotcha Houston homeowners hit most often is thickness: TW60 is a 60-mil membrane, TW40 is 40-mil, and they are not interchangeable under load-bearing tile. A 40-mil sheet under a heavy natural stone floor will deflect, and that deflection is what cracks the grout lines within the first Houston summer. You find the spec printed on the roll edge or on the label inside the cabinet base under the sink. If the label is gone, we measure the exposed edge with a caliper during the estimate. For the countertop transition strips, Tamko’s self-adhering flashing comes in 4-inch and 6-inch widths, and the 4-inch width simply cannot span the standard 1-1/2-inch countertop overhang plus the backsplash gap without pulling loose. We stock both sizes.

On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: Tamko’s membranes are well-made, but they are not the only quality option. We routinely use Schluter and comparable membranes where the manufacturer warranty or the tile spec calls for it. What matters is matching the membrane thickness, the adhesive compatibility, and the movement-joint layout to the Houston climate. Our material partners include Schluter for waterproofing and uncoupling membranes, alongside cabinets from KraftMaid and Wellborn and countertops from Cambria and Silestone, so when the failed part is under a countertop rather than under a floor, we can address the whole assembly in one scope.

Signs Your Tamko Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing

  • Straight-line grout cracks across the tile floor. This almost always means the underlayment below is flexing or has lost bond. The tile is fine; the membrane under it is the problem, and patching the grout is a temporary fix that fails again within months.
  • A hollow sound when you tap the tile. Hollow spots mean the tile has debonded from the substrate. In Houston, humidity cycling through spring and summer accelerates this once water gets under the tile edge.
  • Dark staining at the base of cabinets or along the toe kick. Water is wicking up from the subfloor through a failed moisture barrier. You will see it first on the cabinet bases because the wood absorbs the moisture faster than tile shows it.
  • Caulk that pulls away from the countertop-to-backsplash joint within weeks of re-caulking. The joint is moving too much, usually because the countertop substrate or the flashing strip beneath has failed and the two surfaces are now shifting independently.
  • A musty or earthy smell near the sink base or dishwasher opening. That is moisture trapped under the flooring or behind the cabinet base. Tamko barriers are designed to stop exactly this, and when they fail, the smell typically shows up before the visible damage does.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A stone counter, tile backsplash and open shelf after a kitchen remodel

A full Tamko-related kitchen remodel in Houston, where we pull the affected flooring or countertop, replace the failed underlayment or barrier, and reinstall the finished surface, runs $14,000 to $45,000 depending on the square footage, tile or stone selection, and whether cabinets need to be reset. A smaller job, where we are replacing a single moisture barrier under a kitchen floor section and re-tiling, falls in the $9,000 to $20,000 range. Countertop replacement with the flashing and waterproofing redone runs $2,000 to $6,500 for the surface work, and backsplash replacement with proper waterproofing behind it runs $800 to $2,500.

What drives the range is realistic: the size of the failed area, whether the subfloor or cabinet bases need repair, and the cost of the finish material you choose. We give you a written price before any work starts, every time, on every project. That price includes the tear-out, the new Tamko or Tamko-compatible barrier, the finished surface, and the clean-up. No estimate that grows after the crew arrives. Every project carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it is not done right after the job is complete, we make it right.

DIY or Call Us?

There are two things an owner can safely do before calling: first, check the cabinet base under the sink for a label or roll edge that tells us the Tamko product name and thickness. Second, run a coin or a screwdriver handle across the tile and listen for hollow spots, then mark them with a piece of painter’s tape. That gives us a head start and saves a trip.

What we do not recommend is cutting into the floor or pulling tile yourself. The barrier underneath is bonded to the subfloor, and prying it up without scoring the right seams can damage the wood below and double the repair area. Once the waterproofing layer is compromised, Houston humidity gets into the subfloor quickly, and a small repair becomes a subfloor replacement. If you are not sure what you are looking at, call (254) 272-5240 and describe what you see. We will tell you over the phone whether it sounds like a barrier failure or something simpler, and there is no charge for that conversation.
