PGT Roofing: The Houston Owner’s Guide

If you have PGT roofing on your Houston home and a part has failed, we can help. We stock and install PGT-compatible roofing components, and a typical PGT roof repair in Houston runs between $400 and $1,800 depending on what failed and how much of the surrounding material has to come off. Most owners discover a problem the same way: a water stain appears on the ceiling after a hard Houston rain, or they spot a lifted shingle, cracked flashing, or a missing ridge cap from the yard. The failure is rarely dramatic on day one. But Houston’s heat and humidity don’t wait, and neither should you.

A written price and a covered floor before any work begins – that is where the trust starts. Before we touch your roof, you will know exactly what the repair costs, what parts we are using, and how long the crew will be on site. Elmstead Remodeling Houston is an independent service provider; we are not affiliated with PGT, but we have worked with their roofing product lines long enough to know which parts fail, which hold up, and how to match replacements without guesswork.

This page exists because PGT owners in Houston keep running into the same handful of questions: “Is this part still available? Will a generic equivalent work? How fast can someone get here?” We answer all three below, with the specifics PGT’s own brochures won’t tell you about how their materials behave in a Gulf Coast climate.

Which PGT Models This Applies To

A whole-home remodel with the living, dining and kitchen areas opened up

PGT’s roofing division supplies asphalt shingle systems, underlayment, ridge vents, and flashing kits primarily through builder and contractor channels across the Gulf South. The most common PGT roofing components we match in Houston are their architectural shingle lines paired with PGT-branded synthetic underlayment and aluminum drip edge. The compatibility gotcha most owners miss: PGT’s builder-grade shingle profile has a slightly narrower exposure than the big-box equivalents, so a mismatched bundle will show visible seam lines even when the color looks right from the ground.

To identify your PGT roofing correctly, look for the product label on any leftover bundles in your garage or attic, or check the original builder punch list. The label will list the series name and the exposure width, usually printed on the bundle wrapper. If you don’t have paperwork, measure the visible shingle tab from the roof edge: PGT’s two dominant profiles use a 5-5/8 inch and a 6-1/4 inch exposure. Getting that number right is the difference between a repair that disappears and one that shouts from the street.

For replacements, we recommend PGT OEM components when the roof is under the manufacturer’s warranty period. Once that warranty has run, a quality aftermarket equivalent from GAF or Owens Corning in a matching profile and color often does the job at a better price. We stock both options and will show you the difference on paper before we order anything. We also carry KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone product lines for interior work, but roofing jobs stay focused on roofing: the right part, the right profile, the right install.

Signs Your PGT Roofing Is Failing

  • Water staining on ceilings or upper walls after a heavy rain. This usually means the underlayment has reached the end of its life and the shingles above it are no longer shedding water. Houston’s afternoon downpours are relentless, and a small breach becomes a wide one fast.
  • Shingle granules collecting in your gutters or at the bottom of a downspout. PGT asphalt shingles hold their granules well in the first decade, but once the granule layer thins, UV exposure in a Houston summer accelerates the breakdown quickly. A handful is normal; a visible pile is not.
  • Curling or lifting shingle edges along the south and west roof faces. These faces take the worst of the afternoon sun. When PGT shingles start curling at the corners, the seal strip has likely aged out and the shingle is now just sitting there, waiting for a wind gust.
  • Missing ridge cap pieces or a ridge vent that has shifted. PGT’s ridge caps are the first component to loosen in a strong storm. Once one piece goes, the exposed nail heads underneath become permanent leak points.
  • Flashing pulling away from chimneys, skylights, or wall intersections. PGT’s aluminum flashing is solid, but the sealant used at the transitions can dry out in Houston’s heat, crack, and lose its bond. The flashing itself is often still usable; it’s the seal we have to redo.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A built-in window seat in a bay window

PGT roofing repairs in Houston typically land between $400 and $1,800 installed. A simple repair, like replacing a handful of shingles or resealing flashing, sits at the low end. A repair that involves replacing underlayment, redoing a valley, or matching a discontinued PGT color or profile will run higher because of the material time and the care required to blend the patch.

What drives the range in Houston specifically comes down to three things: roof pitch (steep roofs cost more in labor and safety equipment), the age of your PGT product (older profiles may take longer to match), and access (two-story homes with limited ladder points cost more than single-story ranch layouts). We give you a written price before any work starts, itemized by part and labor, so the number on the quote is the number on the invoice. No allowances, no “we found more once we opened it up” surprises unless you approve the change in writing first. And every PGT roofing repair we complete is covered under our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it is not done right, we make it right.

DIY or Call Us?

There are two things a PGT owner can safely do without a ladder: check your attic for daylight or water marks after a storm, and watch your gutters for granule buildup. Those are good habits. What you should not do is climb onto a Houston roof in August or after a rain to inspect or patch anything yourself. Roofing work involves heights, steep pitches, and materials that get extremely hot in direct Texas sun. A fall from even a single-story roof can be life-changing. We say that not to scare you, but because we have watched too many homeowners turn a $400 flashing repair into a hospital visit.

When a PGT part fails, the most valuable thing we bring is the match. We arrive with the right profile, the right exposure, and the right sealant for Houston’s heat. If you want to talk through what you are seeing before we come out, call (254) 272-5240. A live person answers, and we will tell you honestly whether it is urgent or can wait.
