Unilock Bathroom Remodeling: The Houston Owner’s Guide
We install Unilock bathroom remodeling systems throughout Houston, with most complete bathroom projects landing between $9,000 and $28,000 depending on scope, square footage, and whether we’re working with existing plumbing locations or moving lines. When a homeowner calls us about a Unilock bathroom, it’s usually because a shower pan has cracked, a wall panel has separated at a seam, or the drain assembly has started leaking into the ceiling below. We keep common Unilock-compatible trim, sealants, and drain components on our trucks, and we can source model-specific panels and bases within a few business days.
Elmstead Remodeling Houston is an independent remodeling contractor. We install and service Unilock bathroom systems, but we are not a Unilock dealer or factory affiliate. That independence means we match the right part to the right model instead of pushing whatever is left on a shelf.
Graham Stein, our owner, learned finish carpentry and waterproofing the hard way, on his knees in Southern California bathrooms before bringing his crews to Houston. He has seen enough failed shower bases to know that a cracked Unilock pan is rarely a defect. It is almost always a subfloor that flexed, a drain that was over-torqued, or a mortar bed that was skipped entirely. We check all three before we quote a replacement, because putting a new pan on a bad substrate is just scheduling the next failure.
Which Unilock Models This Applies To

Unilock bathroom products fall into a few distinct lines, and the part that fits one will not necessarily fit another. The Unilock shower bases and wall panels we regularly work with in Houston homes break down this way:
- Acrylic and gelcoat shower bases with center or offset drains. The drain cutout location matters more than the overall footprint. A 60-inch base with a center drain will not accept a pan meant for a right-hand drain without cutting, and cutting a Unilock base voids the factory waterproofing.
- Solid-surface wall panels that ship in two or three pieces per wall. These panels are cut to fit on site, which means a replacement panel from Unilock arrives oversized and must be trimmed to match the existing corner profiles. That is normal, but it means the installer needs to match the factory edge finish, not just the panel color.
- Glass door and frame kits sized to specific base widths. A 58-inch base uses a different door sill profile than a 60-inch base. Homeowners often replace a door without realizing the base width was never a stock size to begin with, especially in Houston homes built in the 1990s and 2000s where alcove tubs were converted to showers with custom framing.
To identify the correct replacement, we look for the Unilock model sticker on the underside of the base or the back of a removable wall panel. If that sticker is gone, we measure the base at the top rail, the drain center from the back wall, and the curb height. Houston humidity causes stickers to peel and ink to fade faster than in drier climates, so it’s common for us to identify a shower base by measurement rather than label.
When a part is unavailable from Unilock, we offer quality aftermarket equivalents that match the original dimensions and finish. For trim and seals, aftermarket is usually fine. For a shower base itself, we prefer OEM Unilock whenever it is still produced, because the slope, drain throat, and curb profile are matched to Unilock’s specific wall panel geometry. Mixing brands on a base and wall system is where we see the most callbacks in Houston.

Signs Your Unilock Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing
We hear the same few symptoms on service calls across Houston, from Kingwood to Sugar Land. Each one tells us something specific, and we fix the cause, not just the visible problem.
- Water staining on the ceiling below the bathroom. This is the most serious sign and it usually points to a failed drain gasket or a cracked base. The water travels along the underside of the subfloor and shows up feet away from the actual leak, which is why we always open a small inspection access rather than patching the stain and hoping.
- A soft or spongy spot in the shower base. Unilock bases are designed to sit on a level mortar bed. When the bed was skipped or it has settled, the acrylic flexes with every step, and that flex eventually cracks the gelcoat. A spongy base is a structural problem, not a finish problem.
- Caulk that keeps pulling away from the wall panel seams. Panels expand and contract with Houston’s humidity swings. When the original installer used silicone over a dirty seam or overfilled the joint, the caulk separates. We clean the seam fully, use a backer rod where needed, and apply a high-movement sealant rated for wet areas.
- A musty smell that never fully goes away. That smell means water is getting somewhere it should not, even if we cannot see it yet. It is often trapped between the Unilock panel and the drywall behind it, fed by a slow weep at the drain or a pinhole in a corner seal.
- Loose shower door hinges or a door that no longer closes square. Unilock door frames rely on the base staying rigid. When the base shifts, the glass binds, and the hinges take the load. That is a base problem showing up as a door problem, and it is one of the easiest to misdiagnose.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

A Unilock bathroom remodeling project in Houston typically falls between $9,000 and $28,000 depending on whether we are replacing a single shower base or gutting the full bathroom to the studs and rebuilding it. Labor and materials move the number, but so does access. A second-floor bathroom in a Heights bungalow with a tight staircase costs more than a first-floor bathroom in Katy with a clear path to the driveway.
| Scope | Typical Installed Range |
|---|---|
| Shower base or pan replacement only | From $3,000 |
| Shower base plus wall panels | $4,500 to $8,500 |
| Walk-in shower with Unilock-compatible base and glass | $4,500 to $12,000 |
| Full bathroom remodel using Unilock surfaces | $9,000 to $28,000 |
Every estimate we write includes the written price before any work begins. That price covers the parts, the labor, the mortar bed or substrate correction if it is needed, and the clean-up. Shoe covers and drop cloths go down before we bring the first tool inside, and we send a photo of the clean-up before the crew leaves. If it is not done right, our 365-Day Done Right Promise means we come back and make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
A homeowner can safely check a few things: look for visible cracks in the base, test the drain cover for tightness, and run a hand along the wall panel seams to feel for separation. Those checks help us diagnose over the phone, and they help you know whether you are dealing with a cosmetic issue or a leak.
What we do not recommend is pulling a Unilock base yourself to check for subfloor rot, cutting into a wall panel to look for water behind it, or resealing a base to a drain without the right gasket and torque. A shower base that is not fully supported is dangerous to stand on, and a drain that is not properly seated leaks into the ceiling below. This is work where a wrong move turns a $3,000 repair into a $20,000 rebuild. If you are seeing water where it should not be, call us at (254) 272-5240 and we will walk you through what we need to see before we schedule. The estimate is free.
A written price and a covered floor before any work begins, that is where the trust starts.
FAQs

A properly installed Unilock shower base lasts 15 to 20 years in Houston before the gelcoat wears thin or the drain assembly needs replacing. Improper mortar support can shorten that to under 5 years, which is why we verify the substrate before installing a new base. Call (254) 272-5240 for a free inspection of your current base.
A crack in the flat field of a Unilock base can be spot-repaired with a color-matched gelcoat kit, but that repair lasts a year or two at best and will not fix the flex that caused the crack. If the base has any softness under it, replacement is the only honest fix. We will tell you which situation you have before quoting anything.
Most Unilock shower base replacements in Houston take two to three days, including demolition, substrate repair if needed, base and drain installation, and a 24-hour cure before we run water. A full bathroom remodel using Unilock surfaces usually runs two to four weeks. We give you a written timeline with your written price.
We keep common Unilock-compatible drains, seals, trim, and sealants on our trucks so most service calls complete the same visit. Model-specific bases and wall panels are ordered by size and finish, and they typically arrive within a few business days. We also work with KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone products when the project includes cabinets or countertops. Call (254) 272-5240 and we will check availability while you are on the phone.
