Unilock Driveway & Pavers: The Houston Owner’s Guide

Unilock paver driveway installation in Houston typically runs $7,000 to $18,000 for a full project, with repairs to failing sections starting around $500 to $1,500 depending on the base failure and square footage involved. We stock Unilock-compatible edge restraints, joint sand, and replacement pavers, and we can usually assess a failing driveway or paver area within a day or two of your call. Most Houston homeowners discover they have a problem the same way: a paver sinks after heavy rain, a section shifts near the driveway apron, or weeds push through joints that have lost their sand.

What you are holding is a product that should last decades when the base is right. When it is not, the pavers are rarely the villain. The base underneath is almost always where the story starts, especially in Houston’s clay-heavy soils that expand and contract through wet and dry cycles. We have pulled up Unilock pavers in Meyerland that looked nearly new on top while the base below had turned to soup. The paver was fine. The installation was not.

Which Unilock Models This Applies To

An open living space after a whole-home remodel

The Unilock product line in Houston driveways and patios breaks into a few families you will likely recognize: Brussels Block, Courtstone, Richcliff, Thornbury, and the permeable Eco-Line options like Eco-Priora and Eco-Optiloc. Each series has different joint widths, thicknesses (typically 60mm for driveways, 80mm for commercial or heavy-load areas), and surface textures. Getting the right replacement paver means matching the series first, then the color lot if you are patching a visible area rather than rebuilding a section.

Here is the compatibility gotcha most homeowners hit: Unilock color lots shift between production runs. A Brussels Block in Sierra that was installed in 2016 will not match a 2024 run perfectly, even though it is technically the same color name. For small patches, this is usually acceptable after a season of weathering. For a large repair in a visible spot, we often recommend pulling pavers from a less visible area of your own project to use in the repair zone, then filling the donor area with the new lot. That is the honest way to keep your driveway from looking like it has a scar.

We service Unilock products as an independent contractor. We are not affiliated with Unilock, but we work with their paver specs and their recommended installation details every week. The parts we use on the repair side include genuine Unilock pavers ordered by series and color, plus industry-standard polymeric joint sand, geotextile fabric, and edge restraints from suppliers we have vetted in the Houston market.

Signs Your Unilock Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

  • Sinking or low spots in the paver field. This means the base layer has compacted unevenly or washed out below. In Houston, this often follows a long wet spring or a broken sprinkler line saturating the subgrade.
  • Pavers rocking underfoot or shifting when you step on them. The bedding layer is no longer holding. If it is isolated, it is a repair. If it is widespread, the base was never compacted correctly and the area will continue to move.
  • Weeds or ants pushing up through the joints. Joint sand has been lost to rain, leaf blowers, or age. Once joints go empty, pavers can drift and chip against each other, and ants will happily excavate the bedding layer.
  • Edge pavers spreading outward into the lawn or flowerbed. The edge restraint has failed or was never installed. Without a solid edge, nothing holds the field in compression, and the whole surface slowly migrates.
  • Water pooling in low areas that used to drain. This is a symptom of base settlement, not a paver problem. Standing water on a permeable Unilock system also means the drainage layer is clogged or the base stone was not spec’d for Houston’s clay conditions.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A remodeled living room with built-in shelves around the fireplace

For the Houston market, paver driveway installation runs $7,000 to $18,000 depending on square footage, access, and whether we are pulling out an old driveway or starting fresh. A paver patio typically lands between $3,500 and $11,000. Smaller repairs, like re-setting a sunken section or re-sanding and re-edging an existing installation, usually start around $500 and go up from there based on what we find when we open up the base.

Every project gets a written price before any work starts. That price includes the materials, the labor, the removal and haul-off of old material where applicable, and the clean-up. We bring drop cloths and shoe covers into the house if we are walking through to access the yard, and we photograph the site before we leave so you can see exactly how it was left. The numbers do not change unless we uncover something structural that nobody could see from the surface, and if that happens, we stop and explain it before proceeding. We do not hand you a surprise at the end.

Our work on Unilock installations and repairs is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If it is not done right, we make it right. That means if a paver shifts or a joint fails within that first year, we come back and address it on our dime.

DIY or Call Us?

This is one area of home improvement where the DIY path is genuinely available, provided the failure is small and cosmetic. Re-sanding joints, pulling a few sunken pavers to add bedding material, or re-seating an edge restraint are all things a careful homeowner can do with a rubber mallet, a level, and the patience to work in small sections. The risk is not safety here the way it is with high-tension garage springs. The risk is getting the base wrong and paying for the same repair twice.

What we see go wrong most often when homeowners tackle paver repairs: they pull too many pavers at once and lose the original elevation, they skip the geotextile and the failure returns after the next big rain, or they buy joint sand from a big-box store that hardens into a crust instead of a flexible, permeable joint. If your problem is more than a few square feet, or if the base itself has failed, that is where the shovel work starts and the mistakes get expensive. Call (254) 272-5240 and we will tell you honestly whether you have a weekend project or a re-installation on your hands. The estimate is free.
