CertainTeed Home Additions & ADU: The Houston Owner’s Guide
We install and finish CertainTeed drywall, insulation, and exterior sheathing systems inside home additions and ADUs across Houston, with most projects landing between $45,000 and $130,000 for a full addition and $90,000 to $220,000 for a detached ADU. If you’re reading this because a CertainTeed product inside an existing addition is failing – cracked drywall, sagging insulation, or moisture bleeding through sheathing – the fix usually comes down to identifying which CertainTeed line was used and matching it correctly. Houston’s humidity turns a small installation mistake into a visible failure within two seasons, which is why we carry CertainTeed-compatible materials on our trucks and start every visit with a written price before any work begins.
Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To
CertainTeed doesn’t make one “home addition” product – it makes the material systems that go inside one. The three we work with most often in Houston additions and ADUs are CertainTeed AirRenew gypsum board (with its M2Tech moisture and mold resistance), CertainTeed Sustainable Insulation fiberglass batts, and CertainTeed Diamondback or WeatherBoard exterior sheathing. Each has a different compatibility question when you’re matching existing material. A 2018-era addition in Meyerland might have AirRenew boards with a 1/2-inch thickness, while a newer ADU near the Energy Corridor could use 5/8-inch Type X for fire rating. You can check by pulling a switch plate and measuring the drywall edge, or look for the printed backside labeling on any exposed board in a garage or attic knee wall. OEM CertainTeed board is worth matching when the original wall assembly was designed around its mold-resistance rating. For insulation batts and sheathing, quality aftermarket equivalents from the same R-value or thickness class perform nearly identically – but Houston code and humidity sometimes make the CertainTeed spec the safer call, especially on exterior-facing surfaces.

Signs Your CertainTeed Home Additions & ADU Is Failing
- Hairline cracks running diagonally from door and window corners. This is usually drywall separating at stress points, often from foundation movement common in Houston’s clay-heavy soil. In an addition, it can also mean the framing behind the CertainTeed board was never properly dried in before hanging.
- Soft spots or bubbling on painted drywall near the ceiling or baseboards. AirRenew’s moisture resistance helps, but a persistent roof leak or poor flashing at the addition’s tie-in point will eventually break down any gypsum board. The bubble is trapped moisture, not a paint failure.
- Musty smell that returns within days of cleaning. Insulation batts that got wet during construction, or that were compressed into a too-thin cavity, hold Houston humidity and mildew. The CertainTeed batt may look fine from the attic side but be failing inside the wall.
- Visible gaps or sagging at the seam where the addition meets the original house. This is a structural connection issue, not a board failure – but the CertainTeed material shows it first. The drywall or sheathing pulls away because the two structures are moving differently.
- Warping or staining on exterior sheathing visible from the crawlspace or unfinished garage wall. Diamondback and WeatherBoard panels delaminate when drainage planes fail. In Houston’s storm season, that can happen in a single bad week if the vapor barrier was installed backwards.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For isolated CertainTeed material replacement inside an existing Houston addition – say, replacing a water-damaged drywall section, re-insulating a wall cavity, or swapping out failed sheathing on one elevation – you’re looking at $800 to $4,500 depending on scope and access. A full addition that integrates CertainTeed materials start to finish runs $45,000 to $130,000, and a complete ADU with CertainTeed drywall, insulation, and sheathing lands at $90,000 to $220,000. Every one of those numbers includes the written price before we start, drop cloths down on your floors, shoe covers at the door, and a photo of the clean-up before the crew leaves. We name the exact CertainTeed SKU or the specific aftermarket equivalent on the written scope, so you know what you’re paying for before a single tool comes out of the truck.
DIY or Call Us?
If you’re just trying to identify what’s in your walls – pulling a switch plate, measuring board thickness, checking the R-value printed on the batt facing – that’s safe to do yourself and it helps us quote faster when you call. Replacing Any of it is where we’d rather you stop. Drywall work kicks up silica dust that’s genuinely bad for lungs and gets into every room of the house through the HVAC. Cutting into a wall cavity without checking for wiring or plumbing first is how Houston homeowners end up with a $400 repair turned into a $4,000 one. And if the failure involves the structural tie-in between the addition and the original house, no material swap will fix it – the framing has to be addressed first. We’ll tell you honestly which one it is. Call (254) 272-5240 and we’ll come look at it, give you the written price, and leave the floors covered while we work.
FAQs

CertainTeed AirRenew drywall and Sustainable Insulation batts should last the life of the structure – 50-plus years – if the addition was dried in correctly and the drainage plane on the exterior holds. In Houston, the two things that shorten that lifespan are roof tie-in leaks and foundation movement, both of which show up in the CertainTeed material within five to ten years if something underneath was done wrong. Call (254) 272-5240 and we’ll identify whether the material itself failed or whether something else took it down.
A hairline stress crack can often be taped, mudded, and repainted without replacing the board, yes. But if the board is soft, bubbling, or showing staining, the gypsum core is compromised and patching over it just hides the problem until the mold spreads behind the patch. For anything that’s been wet, replacement is the honest fix. Call (254) 272-5240 for a written assessment of which one you’re dealing with.
Isolated drywall or insulation replacement typically takes one to two working days, including mudding, drying time, and texture matching. Sheathing replacement on one elevation runs two to four days depending on siding removal and weather. Full addition or ADU builds with CertainTeed materials throughout run eight to sixteen weeks from permit to final walkthrough, and we give you that timeline in writing before the job starts. Call (254) 272-5240 and we’ll scope the timeline for your exact situation.
We keep 1/2-inch and 5/8-inch CertainTeed AirRenew drywall, common R-13 and R-19 Sustainable Insulation batts, and exterior sheathing panels in stock at our Houston shop, and we can pull any remaining SKUs from our local supply partners in one to two days. You don’t order anything. That’s our job. Call (254) 272-5240 and we’ll bring what’s needed, match what’s in your walls, and cover the floors before we start.
