CertainTeed Kitchen Remodeling: The Houston Owner’s Guide
If you have CertainTeed materials in your Houston kitchen and something has failed or is starting to show wear, we can help. Elmstead Remodeling Houston installs and replaces CertainTeed-compatible kitchen components with a typical full kitchen remodel running $14,000 – $45,000 in the Houston market, depending on scope, materials, and how much of the existing kitchen can be salvaged. Most owners discover a failing component through something small at first: a countertop seam separating, a cabinet hinge pulling loose from the frame, or drywall cracking around an island that has settled. We stock common CertainTeed-compatible trim, edge banding, and substrate materials on our trucks, and we can source model-specific pieces within a few days through our Houston supplier network.
A note before we go further: Elmstead Remodeling Houston is an independent remodeling contractor. We are not affiliated with CertainTeed, and we do not speak for their warranty department. What we do is match, fit, and install their products correctly, and we stand behind our own work with a 365-Day Done Right Promise. If it is not done right after the job is complete, we make it right.
Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To

CertainTeed does not manufacture kitchen cabinetry or countertops as a consumer line, but their building products show up throughout Houston kitchens in ways owners overlook. The most common CertainTeed elements we work around and replace during kitchen remodels include their gypsum boards (Regular, Type X, and their mold-resistant lines used behind sinks and dishwashers), their vinyl siding and trim if the kitchen bump-out or exterior wall is involved, and their insulation products in exterior kitchen walls. If your kitchen has a breakfast nook, bay window, or exterior wall remodel, CertainTeed materials are likely in the wall assembly.
The compatibility gotcha in Houston is moisture. CertainTeed’s standard gypsum board is rated for dry interior conditions, but any kitchen wall behind a sink, dishwasher, or range carries splash and steam load. In Houston’s humidity, that standard board absorbs ambient moisture and softens over time. We regularly replace standard board behind sinks with CertainTeed’s mold-resistant or moisture-resistant gypsum, which handles Houston’s seven-month humid season far better. If you bought the house and the kitchen was remodeled before 2015, there is a good chance standard board was used everywhere, including wet zones. That is the single most common CertainTeed-related failure we correct.
When matching trim and siding on a kitchen exterior wall, CertainTeed’s product lines have changed over the years. Their current vinyl siding profiles are not always identical to what was installed ten or fifteen years ago. We measure the profile width and check the lock geometry before ordering, because a quarter-inch difference in profile depth will leave a visible seam on the corner board. If you can find the original CertainTeed product code on a leftover piece in the garage or attic, that saves a supply house trip.

Signs Your CertainTeed Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing
- Soft or spongy drywall behind the sink or dishwasher. This is moisture intrusion into standard gypsum board. The paper face has absorbed water and the gypsum core has begun to lose structure. In Houston, this progresses faster than in dry climates because the board rarely fully dries between use cycles. It needs to come out and be replaced with moisture-resistant board before tile or backsplash goes back up.
- Visible seams or nail pops on the kitchen ceiling or walls. Houston’s clay soil expands and contracts with seasonal moisture, and houses move. Drywall fastened directly to framing with standard fasteners will telegraph that movement as nail pops and hairline seams. We refasten, retape, and skim these zones before painting, and we use adhesive plus mechanical fasteners where the original installer only used one or the other.
- Gaps opening between the countertop backsplash and the wall. The wall behind the backsplash is pulling away or the counter has settled slightly. In many Houston kitchens, the countertop was set before the house finished moving through its first few wet-dry cycles. We remove the backsplash, address the wall condition, and reset with a flexible sealant that tolerates Houston’s seasonal movement.
- Mold staining or musty smell inside the cabinet under the sink. The drywall behind that cabinet is holding moisture, and the cabinet base is wicking it. We pull the sink cabinet, inspect the wall cavity, replace any compromised CertainTeed board, and reinstall with a sealed base. Pet owners should note that we use low-VOC sealants in kitchens where animals spend time near the floor.
- Exterior wall of the kitchen showing siding warping or trim separation. If the kitchen sits on an exterior wall, the CertainTeed siding or trim outside may be failing and letting moisture into the wall cavity. Inside, that reads as cold spots, peeling paint, or persistent humidity in the kitchen. We address the exterior envelope before doing interior finish work, because the interior fix will fail again if water is still getting in.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Houston, a full kitchen remodel with CertainTeed-compatible wall, substrate, and exterior work runs $14,000 – $45,000 installed. A smaller kitchen refresh, where we are replacing drywall in wet zones, redoing backsplash, and addressing one or two failing areas without moving plumbing or electrical, typically lands in the $9,000 – $20,000 range. The spread comes down to linear feet of wet-zone wall, whether the exterior envelope needs work, and how much cabinetry we are removing and resetting.
Every estimate we give is a written price before any work starts. That price includes material, labor, drop cloths on the floors, shoe covers at the door, and a photo of the clean-up before our crew leaves. It includes the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If we find hidden damage after opening the wall, we stop, show you, and put any change in writing before we proceed. No estimates that grow quietly after the crew arrives. Cabinetry on our Houston jobs comes from KraftMaid and Wellborn, and countertops from Cambria and Silestone when those are in scope. We are also happy to work with CertainTeed materials you already have, as long as the existing piece is sound enough to build on.

Some things are worth checking yourself. If you can see a loose cabinet hinge screw spinning in its hole, you can remove the screw, pack the hole with a toothpick or two and wood glue, and reset it. If you see a small gap between the backsplash and counter, you can note whether it opens and closes seasonally, which tells us the house is moving normally. If you have a leftover piece of CertainTeed siding in the garage, you can read the product code off the back and send it to us before we come out. That saves time on any exterior kitchen wall work.
What we do not recommend is cutting into a kitchen wall to replace drywall yourself, especially in Houston homes built before 1980, where you may run into asbestos-containing joint compound or lead paint on the wall surface. We have the testing protocol and the PPE to address that safely. We also do not recommend pulling a sink cabinet without draining and capping the water lines properly. A failed DIY patch behind a dishwasher can go unnoticed for months and turn a $400 drywall repair into a $4,000 cabinet and subfloor replacement. If you are not sure what you are looking at, call us at (254) 272-5240 and describe what you see. We will tell you honestly whether it needs a pro.
FAQs

In a dry, properly ventilated Houston kitchen, CertainTeed gypsum board lasts the life of the house. In a wet zone behind a sink or dishwasher, standard board typically shows softening or mold staining after 8 – 12 years in Houston’s humidity, while their moisture-resistant board can last 20-plus years. If you are planning any kitchen remodel and we are opening a wet wall anyway, we default to the moisture-resistant product, because the cost difference is small and Houston does not give dry walls a break.
Small nail pops and hairline cracks can be repaired with refastening, retaping, and skim coating. Soft or mold-stained board cannot be repaired, only cut out and replaced. Houston’s climate means a soft spot will keep spreading if you only patch over it, because the moisture driving the failure is still behind the repair. Call (254) 272-5240 and we will tell you which situation you have, and give you a written number for the fix.
Most wet-zone drywall and backsplash replacements take two to three working days, including drying time for the joint compound. If we are addressing exterior siding or trim on the kitchen wall along with interior work, plan for three to five days. We schedule around your family’s nap and school hours where possible, and we run quiet tools during rest periods. The written estimate includes the schedule, so you know before we start what days the kitchen will be out of use.
We stock common CertainTeed-compatible trim, edge banding, fasteners, and patching materials on our Houston trucks. Model-specific siding profiles, specialty gypsum board, and color-matched trim pieces are ordered through our local supply partners and typically arrive within two to four business days. If you have a specific CertainTeed product code from an old box or leftover piece, send it our way before we order and we will match it exactly.
