GAF Roofing: The Houston Owner’s Guide
We stock and install GAF-compatible roofing components across Houston, with most replacement work running between $400 and $1,800 for a typical repair, and $8,000 to $20,000 for a full GAF roof replacement. If your GAF shingle, underlayment, flashing, or ventilation component has failed, we can usually match the part and get it scheduled within the week. What owners tell us most often is that they spotted a shingle in the yard after a storm, or noticed a water stain on the ceiling, or heard a drip in the attic during one of Houston’s hard July downpours. Sometimes it is quieter than that: a corner of shingle lifting near the ridge, granules collecting in the gutter, or a flat spot over the garage that looks different from the rest of the roof. Whatever the symptom, the fix starts with identifying exactly which GAF product line is on the house and which component gave out.
Which GAF Models This Applies To
GAF builds roofing under several residential lines, and the part you need depends on which one is up there. The most common in Houston are Timberline HDZ and Timberline UHDZ architectural shingles, followed by Royal Sovereign 3-tab on older homes and Glenwood or Slateline on higher-profile designs. The matching ridge caps, starter strips, and leak barriers (StormGuard, WeatherWatch) are specific to the system, which matters more than most homeowners expect. A Timberline HDZ shingle is not interchangeable with a Royal Sovereign, even if both are “GAF,” because the exposure, thickness, and sealant strip placement differ. To identify what you have, check the roof decking in the attic for a leftover bundle wrapper, or look at the shingle edge from a ladder for the printed product name. If that is not possible, our crew can read it from the roof. Aftermarket equivalents exist for some GAF accessories, but on a roof still under GAF’s system warranty, we recommend OEM parts because mixing in a generic ridge cap or starter strip can void the manufacturer’s coverage. Houston’s heat and humidity make that warranty worth protecting.
Styles & brands we work with

Signs Your GAF Roofing Is Failing
- Granules in the gutters or at the downspout outlets. All asphalt shingles shed granules, but a GAF shingle shedding heavily before year ten usually means UV breakdown from Houston’s sun is ahead of schedule, and the shingle is losing its protective layer.
- Shingle corners lifting or curling at the eaves. This is commonly a nail-pop or a sealant strip that has lost adhesion from attic heat. A lifted corner lets wind-driven rain get under the shingle and into the decking.
- Water staining on a ceiling or along an exterior wall. On GAF systems, the leak is rarely straight above the stain. Water travels along the underlayment and decking, so the actual breach may be several feet upslope, often at a flashing point or a nail line.
- Sagging or soft spots on the roof deck. This signals the decking under the shingles has absorbed moisture over time. It is what we see when a small flashing leak was left alone through one or two Houston summers.
- Algae streaking or dark patches that do not wash off. Houston’s humidity grows algae on shingle surfaces, and while it is mostly cosmetic, it traps moisture and shortens the shingle’s useful life if left untreated for years.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a GAF component or system repair in Houston, expect to pay between $400 and $1,800 depending on what failed and how much of the roof is involved. A full GAF roof replacement on a typical Houston home runs $8,000 to $20,000. The range is driven by roof size, pitch, the number of existing layers that must come off, and whether the decking underneath needs repair. What you will not see from us is a price that grows once the crew arrives. We put the scope in writing before any work starts and we stick to it. Every GAF job includes drop cloths around the interior access point, shoe covers for any technician who steps inside, and a photo of the clean-up before we pull out of the driveway. If something is not right after the job is done, our 365-Day Done Right Promise covers it. We make it right, no fine print.
DIY or Call Us?
What an owner can safely do is check from the ground: look for missing shingles, lifted corners, and granules building up under the downspouts. That tells you something is wrong, but not exactly what. What goes wrong with DIY on a GAF roof is almost always the same: the shingle gets replaced but the nail line, sealant strip, or underlayment repair is guessed at rather than done to spec. Walking a roof also carries real risk, and Houston’s summer heat makes shingles soft and easy to damage further. The roof is not a safe place to learn by trial. If you have a GAF roof that is leaking or shedding, call us at (254) 272-5240 and we will get someone on a ladder, identify the actual failure, and give you a written price before any work begins. The estimate is free.
FAQs

A properly installed GAF Timberline HDZ roof in Houston typically lasts 20 to 30 years, though the Texas heat and humidity often push failures earlier on roofs with poor attic ventilation. The shingle’s granule layer is the first thing to go, so a roof at year 18 with heavy granule loss has likely reached the end of its useful life. Call (254) 272-5240 for a roof assessment and a written price on whatever it actually needs.
Yes, when the failure is isolated to a small area, a targeted repair usually runs between $400 and $1,800 and buys you additional years. The decision depends on the age of the roof and whether the surrounding shingles still seal properly to each other. Call (254) 272-5240 and we will tell you honestly which path makes sense.
A full GAF replacement on a standard Houston roof takes 1 to 3 days once the crew is on site. A targeted component swap, like a section of shingles or a vent, is often done the same day. Call (254) 272-5240 and we will give you a timeline with the written estimate.
We keep common GAF Timberline HDZ shingles, ridge caps, and starter strips in our Houston stock, and we can source less common GAF products like Glenwood or Slateline within a few days. If you have a specific GAF line on your roof, call (254) 272-5240 and we will confirm what we have before scheduling.
