James Hardie Bathroom Remodeling: The Houston Owner’s Guide
A full James Hardie bathroom remodel in Houston typically runs $9,000 to $28,000 installed, and we stock James Hardie backer board and trim materials locally so the crew can start most projects within a week of your written estimate. Homeowners usually call us after a tile job has started failing around the tub lip or shower pan: cracked grout, a soft spot in the wallboard behind the tile, or water staining on the ceiling below a second-floor bath. In Houston’s humidity, those failures move fast once water finds the substrate, so the practical question is rarely whether to replace but how much of the wall needs to come out when we do.
We are Elmstead Remodeling Houston, a Cedarwell company. We are an independent remodeling contractor, not a James Hardie dealer or affiliate, and every project starts with a written price before any work begins.
Which James Hardie Models This Applies To

In bathroom work, the James Hardie product you are almost certainly dealing with is HardieBacker cement board: quarter-inch for floors and half-inch for walls, usually with the HydroDefense waterproof coating on the half-inch sheets. Most Houston bathrooms built or remodeled in the last fifteen years use HardieBacker 500 under tile walls and shower surrounds. If you are looking at the product label, you will see the thickness printed on the board edge, and the HydroDefense version has a distinct darker gray face with the printed grid pattern.
The compatibility question that trips up handy homeowners is seam treatment and fastener spec. HardieBacker must be set over a vapor barrier or the seams must be taped and waterproofed with a membrane like Schluter Kerdi-Band, and James Hardie specifies alkali-resistant fiberglass tape, not drywall mesh. We stock the correct tape, the correct corrosion-resistant screws, and both thicknesses on the truck. For aftermarket board, we do not use it. The material savings do not justify the callbacks when the OEM board is what the tile manufacturer warranty expects underneath.

Signs Your James Hardie Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing
- Discoloration at the tub lip or shower curb. This is water wicking behind the tile where the board meets the tub flange or pan. The HardieBacker itself may still be sound, but the waterproofing layer at that transition has opened up. If left alone in a Houston bathroom, mold follows within weeks.
- Grout cracking along horizontal seams. Backer board was installed with butt joints not taped and mudded, so slight movement transfers directly to the tile line. The crack is the symptom; the untaped seam behind it is the problem.
- A soft or spongy spot in the wallboard. HardieBacker does not get soft when wet the way gypsum does, so if you feel movement, the substrate underneath is likely drywall or green board installed incorrectly behind the tile. That is a tear-out to the studs, not a patch.
- White mineral staining on the board face. Efflorescence from repeated wetting and drying. It tells you water is getting through the tile and grout repeatedly enough to pull minerals out of the cement. The board is saturated, and tile adhesion is failing.
- Musty smell that comes and goes. Trapped moisture in the wall cavity behind the board. By the time you can smell it, the cavity side has been wet off and on for months, and the studs need inspection for rot before new board goes up.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

A full James Hardie-based bathroom remodel in Houston runs $9,000 to $28,000 depending on the bathroom footprint, whether the shower pan is being rebuilt or kept, how much of the plumbing is moving, and the finish level you choose for tile, fixtures, and the vanity. A smaller guest bath or half-bath with a tub surround replacement typically lands in the $5,000 to $12,000 range if the pan stays and the scope covers walls, waterproofing, tile, and trim. Walk-in shower rebuilds run $4,500 to $12,000 depending on the pan and tile selections.
Every quote we write in Houston is line-item: board and waterproofing materials as one line, tile labor as another, plumbing and drain work as its own number, and so on. You will not see a charge for shoe covers, drop cloths, or the end-of-day cleanup photo. Those are part of how we work, not add-ons. The 365-Day Done Right Promise applies to the finished job: if something is not right, we make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
There is an honest split here. A homeowner can check whether seams were taped by removing one escutcheon plate at a shower valve and looking at the board edge. You can also press firmly around the bottom of the tub surround to feel for movement. Those checks tell you whether you have a real problem and roughly how big it is.
What we would not attempt yourself is any tear-out that could involve plumbing, drain seals, or the shower pan. A wrong step there puts water into the framing of a Texas house, and the repair costs multiply behind the tile. The same goes for lifting a pan that has shifted: that is a rebuild, not a patch. If the inspection turns up more than cracked grout, call us at (254) 272-5240 and we will bring a moisture meter to the estimate, not just a tape measure.
FAQs

Installed correctly with seams taped and waterproofed, HardieBacker lasts 30 years or longer in a Houston bathroom, and it is one of the few substrates that does not break down from the humidity cycles we get here. The failure point is almost always the waterproofing at seams and transitions, not the board itself.
Small areas, like a cracked corner or a failed seam above the tile line, can sometimes be repaired by cutting out the affected board and re-waterproofing, but any softness at the tub lip or pan means a larger section comes out. We will always tell you which one you have before writing a scope. Call (254) 272-5240 for an honest assessment.
Most full James Hardie bathroom remodels in Houston take two to three weeks from demo to final walkthrough, with the waterproofing and board phase taking two to three days of that. We schedule quiet-tool work around nap hours and school hours when there are kids in the house, and the crew asks before moving anything.
We stock half-inch HardieBacker 500 and quarter-inch board on our Houston trucks, along with the correct seam tape, fasteners, and waterproofing membrane, so we are not making supply runs mid-job. If your project calls for something unusual, like a specific trim profile, we order it before demo starts so the schedule stays whole.
If your bathroom is showing signs of substrate failure, the fastest way to a straight answer is a free estimate. Call (254) 272-5240 and we will come out, run a moisture check, and hand you a written price before any work begins.
