Oldcastle Driveway & Pavers: The Houston Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Oldcastle-compatible driveway pavers and paver parts throughout Houston, with installed replacement work typically running $7,000 – $18,000 for a full driveway or $3,500 – $11,000 for a patio section. Most paver failures show up first as uneven settling, chipped edges, or a dip where the driveway meets the garage slab after a hard Houston downpour. You’re probably on this page because a section of your Oldcastle pavers has shifted, cracked, or started holding water, and you want to know if it’s a simple fix or a full redo before you call anyone out.
We’re Elmstead Remodeling Houston, an independent contractor, not affiliated with Oldcastle. Graham Stein runs our Houston operation, and he has spent enough time on local driveways to know that Houston’s gumbo clay soil does things to pavers that the manufacturer’s installation guide never accounted for. More on that below.
Which Oldcastle Models This Applies To

Oldcastle manufactures pavers under several product lines that show up regularly in Houston driveways: the Belgard line (their premium interlocking concrete paver), the Holland Stone series, and the Dublin Cobble line, among others. The part you’re replacing depends on which system was originally installed. Most Oldcastle paver driveways in Houston use either a 60mm or 80mm paver thickness. The 60mm units are rated for pedestrian and light vehicle use; the 80mm units are what you want under a driveway that sees daily SUVs and the occasional delivery truck. If your existing pavers are 60mm and failing under vehicle load, that’s often the root cause, not the paver quality itself.
For identification: flip over a loose paver and look for the Oldcastle or Belgard stamp on the underside, along with a mold number. That mold number plus the paver’s face dimensions (typically 4×8 inches for Holland Stone, or 6×6 and 6×9 for the larger formats) tells us exactly which replacement unit to order. We also stock generic aftermarket pavers that match Oldcastle dimensions and color blends for older lines that Oldcastle has discontinued, like certain tumble-finished cobbles from the early 2000s. The aftermarket route works fine structurally, but color matching is harder, so we always bring a sample board to compare against your existing surface before we quote a final number.

Signs Your Oldcastle Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Paver settling or low spots that hold water after rain. This is almost always a base failure, not a paver failure. Houston’s clay soil expands and contracts with moisture, and if the original installer skimped on the crushed limestone base (or skipped it entirely, which we see often in homes built before 2010), the pavers have nothing stable to sit on.
- Cracked or spalled paver faces, especially near the garage apron. Vehicle weight concentrated at the driveway entrance flexes the pavers beyond what a 60mm unit can handle. Spalling, where the top surface flakes off in sheets, also happens when de-icing salts sit on the concrete through winter, even in Houston’s mild cold snaps.
- Weeds and ant mounds pushing up between joints. Joint sand washes out over time, and once the voids open up, Houston’s fire ants move in fast. The weeds are cosmetic; the ant colonies undermine the edge restraint and accelerate paver drift.
- Paver drift or spreading at the driveway edges. This means the plastic or aluminum edge restraint failed or was never installed. Without a solid edge, pavers migrate outward under wheel loads, widening the driveway over time and opening gaps along the border.
- Standing water that lingers more than 24 hours after a storm. Houston gets roughly 50 inches of rain a year. If your driveway isn’t pitched correctly (a minimum 1% slope, or about 1/8 inch per foot), water sits on the surface, works into the joints, and softens the base. It’s a slow-motion washout.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a standard two-car Oldcastle paver driveway in Houston, expect the installed cost to land between $7,000 and $18,000, with most homes in neighborhoods like Meyerland, Oak Forest, and the Energy Corridor falling in the $9,000 – $14,000 range. The spread comes down to three things: total square footage, the condition of the existing base (if we can reuse compacted limestone, you save $2,000 – $4,000 versus a full excavation), and any drainage corrections needed to fix standing water properly.
Every quote we give includes the pavers, joint sand, edge restraint, base repair, labor, and haul-off of the old material. There’s no line item that appears after work starts. We pull the old pavers, inspect what’s underneath, and send you a photo of the base so you can see what we’re working with before a single new paver goes down. A written price before any work begins is standard on every project we run, and if the work isn’t done right, our 365-Day Done Right Promise means we come back and make it right.

AfterDIY or Call Us?
Here’s the honest split. You can safely check a few things yourself: look for standing water patterns after a rain, count how many pavers are cracked or spalled, and note whether the edges are spreading. That information helps us quote accurately over the phone. What you shouldn’t do is pull up pavers and start rebuilding the base on your own. The failure is almost never the paver itself; it’s what’s underneath. Fixing the surface without fixing the base means you’ll have the same problem again in two years, and you’ll have spent weekends on it.
We also see homeowners try to level sunken pavers by prying them up and adding sand underneath. It works for about six months, then the sand washes out through the joints and the paver sinks again, usually worse. If you’re anywhere near the Energy Corridor or Sugar Land side of Houston, give us a call at (254) 272-5240 and we’ll walk the driveway with you. The estimate is free, and you’ll know exactly what’s going on under the surface before you spend a dollar.
FAQs

Properly installed 80mm Oldcastle pavers on a compacted limestone base will last 25 to 40 years in Houston, though you’ll need to refresh the joint sand every 3 to 5 years and reseal every 5 to 7 years depending on sun exposure. A paver driveway on a bad base will show problems within 5 to 8 years. Call (254) 272-5240 if you’re seeing settling before the ten-year mark; we’ll tell you what’s failing and what it costs to fix before any work is scheduled.
Individual cracked pavers can be swapped out without touching the rest of the driveway, as long as we can source or match your specific paver mold and color. Spalled or otherwise surface-damaged pavers usually need replacement rather than repair because there’s no reliable way to resurface a paver face. Call (254) 272-5240 if you’ve got a few broken units; we’ll bring samples and match them on site.
A standard two-car paver driveway replacement in Houston takes 3 to 5 working days, including demo, base prep, paver install, and clean-up. If the existing base is reusable, it’s often on the shorter end. We’ll give you a written schedule before we start, and we stick to it. Call (254) 272-5240 for a free estimate that includes a start-to-finish timeline.
We stock the most common Oldcastle Holland Stone and Belgard 60mm and 80mm pavers in standard Houston color blends, including charcoal, buff, and terracotta, plus edge restraints, joint sand, and base material on our trucks. Less common molds or discontinued colorways we special-order, which adds a few days to the schedule. Call (254) 272-5240 and we’ll check our yard inventory against your paver stamp while you’re on the phone.
