Quikrete Fence Installation: The Houston Owner’s Guide

Quikrete fence installation in Houston typically runs $3,500 to $9,000 for a full post-and-panel setup, and most jobs are completed in two to four working days once we have the concrete and materials staged. We stock Quikrete Fast-Setting Concrete Mix on the truck for fence post work because it sets quickly and handles Houston’s clay soil conditions well. Where owners usually discover a problem is at the post base: the concrete collar around the post has cracked, the post has started leaning after heavy rain, or the gate no longer closes square because the post has shifted.

If you’re reading this because a fence post is wobbling or a concrete footer has crumbled, you’re in the right place. Graham Stein and the crew at Elmstead Remodeling Houston have set hundreds of posts in Houston’s gumbo clay, and we’ve learned which Quikrete products hold up and which ones need a different approach when the ground stays wet for weeks.

Which Quikrete Models This Applies To

Quikrete doesn’t make fence panels or posts. What Quikrete makes is the concrete that anchors your fence to the ground. For fence installation, we work with several Quikrete products, and the right one depends on your soil, your post type, and how fast you need the fence to hold weight.

Quikrete Fast-Setting Concrete Mix is what we use for most Houston fence posts. It’s the red bag, and it sets in about 20 to 40 minutes. You pour it dry into the hole around the post, add water, and it hardens without premixing. That matters in Houston because a slow-setting mix can slump or wash out if a summer thunderstorm rolls through before the concrete has cured.

Quikrete Concrete Mix (the yellow bag) is a general-purpose option that works fine for fence posts when the soil is stable you just need to mix it first and give it a full day to set. For heavier posts, gates, or any post that will carry a lot of lateral load, we sometimes spec Quikrete 5000, the high-strength mix rated at 5,000 psi. It resists the sulfate content in Houston’s coastal clay better than standard mixes.

One compatibility note that saves homeowners money: if your existing posts were set with Quikrete and the concrete collar is still solid, you don’t always have to dig the whole footer out. We can often reuse the existing concrete and re-set a replacement post into it, provided the collar hasn’t cracked below grade. If it has, it all comes out and gets new Quikrete.

Signs Your Quikrete Fence Installation Is Failing

  • Post leans to one side but the concrete looks intact. The footer may not be deep enough for Houston’s expansive clay, which swells when wet and shrinks when dry. A post set at 18 inches will move in this soil; 24 to 30 inches is the minimum we spec.
  • Cracked concrete collar around the post base. Water gets into the crack, the clay expands, and the crack widens. Once the collar is cracked through, the post has lost lateral support.
  • Gate drags or won’t latch. The post has shifted, not the gate hardware. Houston’s clay moves posts a little more every wet season, and the first sign is usually a gate that suddenly acts up.
  • Fence wobbles when you push on it. The post itself may be rotting below grade, or the concrete has separated from the post. You should be able to push a fence post and feel almost no movement; anything more than a fraction of an inch means the footer is no longer doing its job.
  • Standing water pooling at the post base. Houston’s clay drains slowly. If water sits around the post after rain, the concrete is soaking and freezing-and-thawing cycles (rare but real in Houston’s odd cold snaps) will eventually crack it.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A remodeled living room with built-in shelves around the fireplace

A full Quikrete fence installation in Houston generally lands between $3,500 and $9,000, depending on the number of posts, the fence material, and how much of the old concrete footer needs to come out. A simple repair where we reset one or two posts with new Quikrete is usually a few hundred dollars per post. The range is wide because a 40-foot side fence in Katy costs very different money than a 200-foot perimeter fence in Bellaire with gate posts and hard clay digging.

Every fence quote we write includes the concrete, the post anchors or brackets, labor, haul-away of old concrete and posts, and a written price before any work starts. Not an estimate that grows after the crew arrives. A written price. It’s the same promise we make on kitchen remodels and whole-home projects: the number on the page is the number you pay, unless you ask us to add scope mid-project and we agree to it in writing first.

The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers fence work too. If a post shifts or the concrete fails within a year of installation, we come back and make it right.

DIY or Call Us?

Setting fence posts with Quikrete is one of the more approachable concrete jobs. The product does a lot of the work for you: pour it dry, add water, hold the post plumb, and let it set. If you have one post that’s leaning and the concrete around it is still intact, you can sometimes dig out the old post, clean the hole, and set a new post in fresh Quikrete in an afternoon.

Where DIY goes wrong in Houston is depth and drainage. A post hole that’s only 18 inches deep will lean within two wet seasons. Our clay soil expands and contracts enough to move a poorly set post every time the ground dries out. The other common mistake is not bracing the post while the Quikrete sets: a post that shifts a quarter inch during the set will be visibly out of level for the life of the fence.

If the concrete has cracked below grade, or you’re dealing with more than one or two posts, call us at (254) 272-5240. We’ll dig the old footers out, set the posts to the correct depth for your specific soil, and haul away the broken concrete so you’re not left with a pile of rubble by the fence line.
