Schluter Driveway & Pavers: The Houston Owner’s Guide

If you have a Schluter product on or around your Houston driveway or paver hardscape and a part has failed, the installed replacement typically runs $180 – $520 depending on the specific component and how much surrounding material needs to be reset. We stock Schluter-compatible edge profiles, transition strips, and drainage components on our trucks, and most replacements can be completed in a single visit once we’ve confirmed the exact series match. Homeowners usually discover the failure the way you probably just did: a profile lip that’s lifted at the corner, a transition strip that’s popped out of its channel, or a drainage grate that’s cracked under a paver edge where water pools after a Houston downpour.

Schluter makes tile edging and transition profiles that sometimes get installed where a paver driveway meets a garage slab, a front walk, or a tiled porch. When that strip fails, it’s rarely the Schluter metal itself that gave out. What fails is usually what’s under it: the thin-set bond in Houston’s wet-dry-wet cycle, the substrate shifting after a summer of clay soil expansion and contraction, or water that found its way into a seam and sat there through a humid August.

Which Schluter Models This Applies To

If your driveway or paver area uses a Schluter profile, you’re almost certainly dealing with one of three product families. Schluter-SCHIENE is the classic straight edge profile for tile-to-paver or tile-to-concrete transitions. Schluter-RENO-TK is the ramp-style transition used where a driveway paver edge meets a garage slab or a threshold, and it’s the one we see fail most often in Houston because it takes direct tire load. Schluter-DILEX movement joints show up in larger paver-and-tile installations where an expansion gap has to stay flexible, and when those fail it’s usually the anchoring leg that’s pulled loose.

Identifying the right part comes down to the code stamped on the underside of the profile leg, if it’s still legible, plus two measurements: the profile height in millimeters and the tile or paver thickness it was paired with. A RENO-TK that was correct for a 3/8-inch tile bed will not sit right under a 1-inch paver. That’s the compatibility gotcha we see most often in Houston: someone patched a broken edge with whatever the hardware store had, and now the new strip sits proud or sinks below the paver line. For OEM versus aftermarket, we recommend OEM Schluter profiles wherever the part takes vehicle weight or sits at a threshold. Aftermarket aluminum edge strips can work for a decorative paver border, but they don’t carry the same load rating and they won’t match the finish on the rest of your run.

Signs Your Schluter Driveway & Pavers Component Is Failing

  • The profile edge has lifted at one corner or along a seam. This usually means the anchoring leg has lost its bond to the thin-set underneath, often after water pooled against the strip during a Houston storm and worked its way under the metal.
  • The transition strip pops up when a car tire rolls over it. That’s a substrate movement problem, not a strip problem. The clay soil under Houston driveways shifts with wet and dry seasons, and the strip eventually works loose from its channel.
  • You can see a visible gap between the paver edge and the profile. The pavers have settled, the profile hasn’t, and the gap is now catching water, dirt, and the edge of a sneaker. Left alone, this gap grows and the next failure is a cracked paver corner.
  • There’s rust staining or white corrosion where the profile meets the concrete. This is common on older aluminum profiles exposed to de-icing salts or fertilizer runoff, and it means the protective finish has worn through. The part hasn’t failed structurally yet, but it will.
  • Water stands against the profile after rain instead of draining away. Schluter drainage components and edge profiles are meant to shed water away from the tile or paver body. When water stands, the profile has lost its slope or the drain channel is blocked with Houston’s fine silt and leaf debris.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a Schluter driveway or paver edge profile replacement in Houston, expect to pay $180 – $520 installed, depending on the length of the run, the profile family, and how much of the surrounding paver or tile bed needs to be reset before the new strip can seat properly. A short RENO-TK threshold replacement at a garage door might land near the bottom of that range. A full run of SCHIENE along a tiled front porch with paver transition, where we have to re-level three or four pavers and re-bond the thin-set, lands near the top.

The written price we give you before any work starts includes the OEM Schluter profile, the thin-set or anchoring material, removal of the failed part, surface prep, installation, and the clean-up afterward with drop cloths down and shoe covers on before our crew walks inside. If we find substrate damage once the old part is out, we’ll stop and show you what we found before any additional work is quoted. There is no change order unless you approve it first. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if that new profile fails within a year, we make it right.

DIY or Call Us?

There is no serious safety risk in a Schluter profile repair the way there is with garage door springs or an electrical run, but the failure points are almost always below the surface, and that is where DIY goes wrong. You can absolutely check the measurements yourself: pull the code off the underside of the profile if it’s still there, measure the height with a small ruler, and look at whether the pavers on either side are level with each other. What you can’t easily do from a weekend trip to the hardware store is re-bond an anchoring leg so it holds under vehicle weight, or diagnose whether the gap you found means the paver bed underneath has shifted.

What we’ve seen on Houston jobs is that a homeowner patches the visible symptom, the profile holds for one season, and then the same corner pops again because the substrate movement was never addressed. If your profile has lifted, popped, or cracked, call (254) 272-5240. We’ll come look at it, tell you honestly whether it’s a simple part swap or a substrate issue, and give you a written price before any work begins.
