Schluter Roofing: The Houston Owner’s Guide

Schluter roofing replacement in Houston typically falls between $400 and $1,800 for repair work, with full roof replacement running $8,000 to $20,000 depending on square footage and material choice. We stock Schluter-compatible flashing, edge profiles, and drainage components on our trucks, and most single-part swaps can be completed in one visit. Homeowners usually catch the problem the same way: a small drip near a penetration, a lifted edge profile after a storm, or water staining on a ceiling that traces back to a failed waterproofing seam.

What surprises most Houston owners is how quickly a small Schluter component failure turns into a bigger problem. Our high humidity and intense afternoon downpours push water into gaps that would stay dry in a drier climate. A loose edge profile that would sit harmless for months in Arizona becomes an active leak here within weeks. Graham Stein has walked into enough Houston attics to know exactly what that first water mark looks like and what it costs to fix before the decking underneath starts to rot.

We’re an independent Houston contractor, not affiliated with Schluter, but we’ve installed and repaired their roofing profiles long enough to know the product lines inside and out. A written price and a covered floor before any work begins – that is where the trust starts.

Which Schluter Models This Applies To

Schluter’s roofing and balcony product lines break down into a few key series, and knowing which one you have changes the conversation about what to buy. The most common in Houston homes are Schluter-DITRA substrates used under tile on balconies and rooftop decks, Schluter-BARA edge profiles for exposed roof edges, Schluter-TROBA drainage mats, and the Schluter-KERDI waterproofing membranes that tie into roof penetrations. Each series has its own compatibility rules, and mixing components from different series is where DIY repairs tend to go sideways.

Here’s the specifics that matter. Schluter profiles are sized in millimeter increments, and a BARA edge profile spec’d for a 10mm tile assembly will not seat correctly on an 8mm assembly. The part number is stamped on the underside of most aluminum and stainless profiles, and we always ask owners to snap a photo of that stamp before we quote. If the stamp is worn off, we measure the exposed face and the anchoring leg, because those two dimensions identify the profile with certainty.

On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question for Schluter specifically: this is one brand where we steer clients toward OEM. Schluter’s aluminum profiles use a specific alloy and anodizing process that resists the salt and humidity that eats cheaper aftermarket profiles in Houston’s coastal-adjacent climate. A generic aluminum edge profile from a big-box store will cost less up front but typically shows pitting and white corrosion within two to three years here. Schluter’s profile will still look clean at five. The math works itself out.

Signs Your Schluter Roofing Is Failing

  • Water staining on a ceiling below a balcony or roof deck. This is the most common first sign, and it usually means water has found a path through a KERDI seam or past a profile that has pulled away from the substrate. By the time the stain shows, water has been traveling through the assembly for a while.
  • Lifted or rattling edge profile at a roof edge. Schluter BARA and similar profiles anchor into the tile assembly with a leg that depends on thinset coverage. When that bond fails, the profile lifts and wind-driven rain gets underneath. We see this most often on south-facing Houston exposures where the daily heat cycle flexes the aluminum.
  • White crystalline deposits at seams or fasteners. That’s efflorescence, and it means moisture is moving through the assembly and carrying minerals with it. It rarely appears without a breach somewhere nearby in the Schluter system.
  • Crumbling or hollow-sounding tile on a rooftop deck. The DITRA membrane may be intact, but if the thinset bond below it has failed due to water intrusion, the whole assembly loses structural unity. Walking on it sounds different – more hollow, less solid.
  • Standing water that takes more than 48 hours to drain after a Houston rain. Schluter TROBA drainage mats are designed to move water quickly. If water sits, the mat is clogged with sediment or has been crushed by furniture or planters, and the waterproofing below is now sitting in a constant puddle.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A walk-in shower with large-format tile and a built-in niche

For Schluter component replacement in Houston, you’re looking at $400 to $1,800 for most repair jobs. That range covers a single BARA edge profile replacement, a KERDI seam repair at a roof penetration, or replacing a small section of TROBA drainage mat. If the failure has worked its way into the roof decking and the repair expands into a roof section replacement, the cost moves into the $8,000 to $20,000 range for full roof replacement territory.

Every quote includes the same things: the named Schluter part with its part number, the labor to remove the failed component and prepare the substrate, the installation with Schluter-approved thinset or sealant, and a written line-item price before we touch anything. We don’t hand you a number and then discover surprises after the crew arrives. The written price is the price.

Our workmanship carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If something isn’t right after the job is complete, we make it right. No fine print, no phone tag, no argument about whose fault it is.

DIY or Call Us?

There are things an owner can safely check. You can photograph the part number stamp on a failing profile. You can clear debris from a TROBA drain path and see if water moves faster. You can watch a ceiling stain for 48 hours after a rain to see if it’s actively growing. None of those steps require a ladder on a wet Houston roof.

But the moment you’re talking about removing tile to access a KERDI seam, lifting an edge profile with hot thinset underneath, or standing on a second-story roof deck after rain, you’re in territory where one wrong step costs more than the repair itself. Schluter systems fail when the waterproofing bond is broken, and recreating that bond correctly requires surface preparation and product knowledge that comes from doing it repeatedly. We’ve also seen owners buy the wrong profile width online and install it over the failed one, which traps water against the deck and makes the eventual repair twice as expensive.

If you’re holding a failed Schluter part and a photo of your roof, call (254) 272-5240. We’ll tell you over the phone whether it’s a simple swap or something bigger, and the estimate is free.
