Schluter Windows & Doors: The Houston Owner’s Guide
Schluter window and door profiles and transitions are stocked and installed by Elmstead Remodeling Houston, with most replacement parts running $40 – $180 for the part itself and $180 – $450 installed. The work is usually completed in a single visit. Most Houston homeowners discover a failed Schluter window or door component the same way: a drip edge that has pulled away from the threshold, a sealing profile that has hardened and cracked after a few Texas summers, or a transition strip that now catches the door as it swings. The part is small, but the water damage it prevents is not.
We carry Schluter-brand profiles and compatible aftermarket equivalents for window sills, door thresholds, and the transitions where tile meets an exterior door frame. If the part on your floor or sill is stamped with a Schluter model code, we can match it. If the stamp has worn away, we can identify it from the profile shape and the measurements of the channel it sits in.
Which Schluter Models This Applies To

Schluter makes a wide line of profiles and transitions, and the ones we see most often in Houston homes are: Schluter-RENO-U (edge protection for floor transitions at doorways), Schluter-SCHIENE (edge profiles for tile at window returns), Schluter-DILEX (movement joints and expansion profiles), and Schluter-JOLLY (square-edge trim for window sills). Each comes in multiple heights, finishes, and substrate thicknesses. A RENO-U that measures 1/2 inch tall will not seat properly in a channel sized for 3/8 inch. That is the most common mismatch we fix after a homeowner buys a part online.
How to identify your part: look for the model code stamped along the anchoring leg of the profile. If the code is gone, measure the channel depth, the overall height above the finished floor, and the length of the run. Also note the finish: brushed stainless, aluminum, matte black, or a color-matched powder coat. For OEM versus aftermarket, Schluter’s own profiles use their specific anchoring geometry and are worth the premium for exterior door thresholds, where the profile takes direct sun and rain. For interior window returns, a quality aftermarket equivalent with the same dimensions performs identically and costs about 30 percent less. We stock both and will tell you which one belongs where.
We are an independent Houston remodeling contractor and are not affiliated with Schluter Systems. We do, however, keep their parts on our trucks because Houston’s humidity and heat cycles are hard on window and door profiles, and families should not have to wait a week for a part that keeps their back door from sealing properly.

Signs Your Schluter Windows & Doors Is Failing
- The profile has lifted or curled at the ends. This is thermal expansion and contraction working against the original adhesive or mechanical anchor. Houston’s temperature swings, especially on west-facing doors, flex these profiles daily, and eventually the end tabs lose their grip.
- Water is pooling at the threshold after rain. The profile is no longer creating a continuous water-shedding edge, and water is getting under the tile edge instead of over it. Left alone, this migrates under the door frame and into the subfloor.
- The door drags or catches on the transition. The profile has shifted or warped, raising the threshold height by a fraction of an inch. That friction wears the door bottom and the profile surface at the same time.
- Visible cracking or discoloration on the profile surface. Schluter’s anodized and powder-coated finishes hold up well, but after direct afternoon sun for several years, the powder coat on some aftermarket profiles can chalk and crack. The structural profile is often still sound, but the look is done.
- Grout or caulk at the window return keeps splitting. The window profile is no longer limiting movement between the tile edge and the window frame, so the joint is taking all the stress. Re-caulking will fail again within a season unless the profile is reseated or replaced.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

In Houston, expect to pay $180 – $450 installed for a single Schluter door threshold or window profile replacement, including the part, demo of the failed profile, substrate prep, and installation with the correct anchoring method. If the subfloor or sill underneath shows water damage, the repair extends into the tile or framing, and the total typically lands between $450 and $1,500 depending on how far the water traveled. We write the parts cost and the labor cost as separate line items on every estimate, before any work starts, so there is no mystery about what you are paying for.
We install with a written price before a single tool comes out of the truck, drop cloths down, and shoe covers at the door. The workmanship is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the profile fails or shifts within a year of installation, we come back and make it right. If you are replacing a Schluter profile as part of a larger window replacement or exterior door project, we can quote that together; Houston window replacement runs $4,500 – $15,000, and impact-rated windows run $8,000 – $25,000.
DIY or Call Us?
Some of this work is genuinely approachable. You can safely check whether end tabs have pulled free, whether the channel is clean of old mortar, and whether the profile is cracked. You can also take photos and measurements so we can match the part before we arrive. What is harder to get right without experience: removing a failed profile without chipping the surrounding tile edge, cutting the replacement without a burr that will catch the door, and anchoring it so it does not lift again next August.
Interior window returns are the most forgiving DIY path. Exterior door thresholds are the wrong place to learn, because a bad seat there channels water into the floor assembly. If you are unsure, send us a photo before you cut anything. We will tell you honestly whether this is a Saturday project or a quick service call, and you can reach a live person at (254) 272-5240 any time to talk it through. A written price and a covered floor before any work begins, that is where the trust starts.
FAQs

An interior Schluter window profile will typically last 15 – 25 years. An exterior door threshold in Houston lasts 8 – 15 years, depending on sun exposure and how much standing water it sees. West-facing thresholds wear out fastest. If your profile is under ten years old and failing, we look at the install first, not the part.
Sometimes. If the profile has lifted at one end but the metal is not cracked, we can often re-anchor it, re-bed the tile edge, and clean up the surrounding grout. If the profile is cracked, corroded, or the anchoring leg is broken, replacement is the smarter fix. We will show you which applies before you pay for anything. Call (254) 272-5240 and we can tell you more from a photo.
Most single-profile replacements take 2 – 3 hours on site, including removal, prep, installation, and cleanup. If the substrate underneath has water damage, the job extends to a second visit after the area dries or the framing is addressed. We will tell you the timeline in writing before the crew arrives.
We stock common Schluter RENO-U, SCHIENE, and DILEX profiles in standard Houston door and window sizes on our service trucks, along with color-matched aftermarket equivalents. Unusual finishes or specialty sizes may take 3 – 5 days to source. If we already have your part, the repair happens on the first visit. If we do not, we order it and schedule you once it lands, with the total price confirmed before the first cut.
